____________________________________“I saw her,” Margret said with a vague smile on her lips. She shifted a bit on the hospital bed and turned to face Ken and Rose. Rose’s husband was at the corner of the ward making a call.
“Saw who?” Ken asked as he dropped his phone on the bedside drawer, giving her his full attention.
“Wendy. I was in this… this dark haze when I saw her. At first I didn’t recognize her, she looked so grown up; tall and beautiful. She was with two other kids and a man…I guess. It wasn't really clear. Do I sound crazy?” she asked, worry lacing her voice.
“No, you don't. So, tell me what you saw,” Rose said as she smiled down at her. What had she done to deserve these kind of people in her life? Margret wondered, a tad overwhelmed.
“I didn’t want to kill myself. I started hearing these voices in my head. I…” Margret’s voice shook with emotion, she pressed her lips together in a bid to stop herself from crying. Rose patted her hand lightly, encouraging her to go on.
Margret sighed then went ahead to tell them everything. She told them of the darkness she seemed to be stuck in and about the surreal hills and valleys that stretched as far as the eyes could see.
“It was so beautiful, Rose. The grasses were greener than green and I’ve never seen flowers as lovely as the ones that dotted the hills, and my baby was there. She wasn’t alone; she looked happy and peaceful. I was so thrilled with the joy of seeing Wendy that I attempted to go after her but it wasn’t possible.” Margret released a bleak laugh then continued,
“It was at that point I remember sputtering water and hearing you beg me to wake up,” Margret said with a faraway look on her face.
“What if you hadn’t come? What if your husband didn’t see the keys? What if you didn’t know CPR? I would have died. I would have…” Margret began to sob, making her chest hurt even more. Ken squeezed her hand lightly in a bid to comfort her.
“It’s God that saved you. All the lessons I know on CPR is from a short First Aid class I took years ago. I’m certain my CPR wasn't what saved you,” Rose said in a low voice.
Margret looked at her and saw she wasn’t joking.
“Then how…?”
“I’m grateful you’re alive and even if you don’t believe it, I know it’s God who saved you.” Ken offered her his hanky as he spoke. Her hand shook when she accepted it. After wiping her tears, she blew her nose noisily and attempted to return it to him.
Ken laughed and shook his head vigorously. “No thanks, you can keep that for your floodgates.” She chuckled and dropped the hanky on her lap.
“Saving people is God’s idea, and all His work. All we are to do is trust Him to do it. The life that Christ gives is God’s gift from start to finish. This is the life that I, Rose and David have. It’s a free gift Margret. All you have to do is accept it by believing in His sacrifice on the cross.”
Why not? Margret looked at all three of them. She had tried her own way and it sucked royally, she wanted this Jesus-bubble they lived in. She wanted their kind of freedom but a thought worried her.
“But, there are so many rules to keep. I would be a bad child of God,” Margret said as she stared at her fingers.
“We live our life by trusting God’s Spirit who live in us. I don’t look out for rules to keep, instead I look out for His love and grace. It’s God’s loves that preserves us not a bunch of rules or the fear of punishment. I feel as if I’ve talked too much. Did I talk too much?” Rose asked in a worried tone.
