Ernie and Bert!

Chapter three

in this chapter you will learn about the origin story of Ernie and Bert.

ERNIE!

Ernie has been on the show since the first episode. he and his best friend bert live together in the basement apartment  in 123 sesame street. he has been known to take baths often with his rubber duckie and to play a saxophone badly.

he has also been known to keep Bert awake at night for reasons like wanting to play the drums or wanting to count something like sheep.

he has a distinct chuckling laugh, a trait he shares with his cousin Ernistine.

many Ernie and Bert segments include Ernie wanting to play a game with  Bert and Bert just wants to do something like read.  by the time Bert starts playing and then starts having fun Ernie is bored and will move on the something else.

he has also frequently spotted with out Bert. often hosting a segment with Cookie Monster, Sherlock Hemlock or lefty the salesman.

Ernie is a live hand puppet unlike Bert who is a hand rod puppet, the puppeteer would use one hand to movie the puppets mouth and one hand to movie the arm. however in segments where Ernie needed two hands another puppeteer would be the other hand. but when Ernie needed one hand the other arm was stuffed and pinned to the puppets chest.

Many rumors about Ernie and Bert were not true.

such as a rumor about Ernie and Bert being gay. the show confirmed that Ernie and Bert are not gay they are just best friends *really good friends* that live together.

the stripes on the puppets sweaters also reveal a fact about them. the stripes  on Ernie's sweater are horizontal, showing that he is very relaxed, easy going and care free.

BERT!

Bert is Ernie's best friend and roommate the pair share the basement apartment at123 sesame street.

unlike Ernie, Bert is serious, studious and tries to make sense of Ernie's whimsical *sometimes weird*

actions, well I guess opposites attract.

his own passions include collecting paper clips, collecting bottle caps, reading boring stories (really that's the name of his favorite book), consuming oatmeal and studying pigeons.

Bert's best friend (besides Ernie) is his pet pigeon Bernice.

Bert also has a distinct bleating laugh.

Bert's nose has fallen off his face many times.

although Ernie has been seen without Bert many times, Bert is rarely seen without Ernie by his side.

Bert's family includes:

his identical twin brother Bart,

his infant nephew Brad.

 his aunt Matilda,

his uncle Brad,

his grandpa Mountain Mike and his uncle Louie.

the Bert puppet is a hand rod puppet which mean that the puppeteer puts their dominate hand inside the puppet and then uses their other hand to control thin rods attached to Bert's arms. the rods are sometimes referred to as arm rods.
