Cookie Monster is a blue monster and main character on the  show. he speaks with a growly voice and often says me instead of I. as his name implies he loves cookies, although his primary craving is cookies he will eat anything from letters and numbers to hubcaps.

Cookie Monster was originally called The Wheel-Stealer. Three Puppets were designed for a general foods commercial. the commercial featured three snack foods, Crowns, Flutes and Wheels. each of the three monsters was addicted to the snack foods they were named after. There was the Crown-Grabber, a big monster with a Boris Karloff accent and teeth that looked like giant knitting needles. there was also the Flute-Snatcher, who was a speed demon with a huge pointed nose and wind blown hair. then there was The Wheel-Stealer, a short fuzzy monster with a wide face, wonky eyes, a wide face a huge pointed teeth.

"these monsters loved the snack foods they were named after. each time the muppet narrator, a human looking guy, was about to eat a tray of Wheels Crowns and flutes the monsters would race in and grab the snacks and zoom out.  the narrator would the n warn the audience that these monsters were masters of disguise, they could be disguised as someone in your house right now. at that point the monsters turned human then dissolved back into monsters"

the commercial was never aired though. but all of the monsters became a part of the muppets (and sesame street!).

The Crown-Grabber became know as The Beautiful Day Monsters where in an Ed Sullivan show sketch he ruins a girls beautiful day.

The Flute-Snatcher became known as Snake Frackle, a back round monster used in The Great Santa Clause Switch and The Muppet Show.

But the Wheel-Stealer was destined for greater things.

at first he was used in a sketch called  The Coffee Break Machine, where he had green fur. it seemed like he would become another back round monster like the other two but then he was put on sesame street.

the monster gained his blue fur when he first came onto Seasme Street. he played the role of  a toddler who got in the way of stuff with out thinking, getting fussy when he didn't get his way or eating Kermit's property during a lecture.

but in these first few episodes young viewers were scared of cookie monster because he personified the childhood fear of being eaten by a monster.

cookie monster became a cookie eating furry cuddly monster when two things happened. one, the head writer Jeff Moss wrote a sketch where the furry monster kept stealing Ernie's cookies. two , an other sketch was written where a furry blue monster was a contestant on a game show, where the monster chose a cookie over many other prizes.

in the second season of the show he was officially Cookie Monster.

Some parents were afraid that Cookie Monster was teaching kids bad habits like how he says 'me' instead of 'I'. and how he "teaches kids improper eating habits.'

in season 36 there were many segments where Cookie Monster encouraged kids to eat a balanced diet and enjoy cookies as a sometimes food.

however an internet rumor started about the show dropping the character entirely or renaming the character veggie monster.

There in a hole in the back of the puppets mouth where whatever the puppets eating mostly disappears into the puppet.

I think we can all agree you can't have sesame street without Cookie Monster.

GROVER

Grover is a blue monster who describes himself as "a cute furry little monster'

the character is multi talented monster taking on many roles and professions through out the episodes.

he appears in many segments such as, waiter Grover, Super Grover and Global Grover.

His best selling book "The Monster At The End of This Book" is still a very popular book today and many sequels of the book has been made.

the character we now know and love was once called Gleep. he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show around Christmas time as a monster who worked in Santa's work shop.

the original Grover (Gleep I mean.) was green with an oddly shaped pink nose.

During the first season named was changed to Grover. And in the second season he gained his blue fur.

The Gleep puppet became known as Grover's Mother.

Ever since the first season of the show viewers knew the Grover and Kermit were very close friends, they have  appeared in many segments together and often the segment includes Kermit lecturing someone while Grover assists Kermit by making visual aids.

Grover, along with Elmo, is one of the more popular characters because of his silly way of speaking and his imaginary adventurers that kids can connect to.

Grover is four years old.
