Chapter Twenty-Three

Pierre!” I screamed, gripping the armrests tightly as the car swung around, causing me to crash against the window. I stared at him in shock, my jaws almost clamping down on my tongue and we swerved again. “What the hell are you doing?”

His eyes were wild, brown hair falling in his face as he put the car back into gear, shooting forward with a speed that made my ribs jolt. “Saving your life!” he shouted, twisting the wheel violently to avoid a tree and continuing to rocket down the dirt road.

“Holy crap!” I found myself wanting to cover my eyes as we barely missed a massive tree. “Pierre, you can’t do this!”

“Astrid, what the hell is going on?” Jay snapped, and my eyes flew back to the iPhone’s screen. Jay had placed his gun next to Charlie’s temple, but Charlie seemed to be only half-conscious, so he did nothing.

“Don’t!” I begged him, panic pounding through me. The fear of losing Charlie was greater than the fear of crashing the car, and I found myself gripping the iPhone instead of my armrests. “Please, don’t shoot! I’ll get us out of this!”

Jay glanced at his wrist. “You have two minutes.”

Two minutes. Right. I could do this.

I turned in my seat so that I was looking Pierre in the eye. “Pierre, get your ass back over to Decrioux’s manor,” I snarled through gritted teeth.

He glanced at me, still swerving violently. I supposed I could thank Delta for teaching him how to drive like a maniac in a relatively safe way. He ignored my order, keeping his eyes on the road ahead of him. I bit my lip, looking out the back window. The two Harleys were rapidly approaching, and it was then that I saw that each carried two guards: one driving, and one pointing a fully capable AK-47 at our car.

Crap. Why couldn’t luck be on my side today?

I groaned, my heart racing as I racked my brain. “Pierre, listen to me!” I pleaded, actually grabbing his arm. This motion was probably suicidal, seeing how wildly he was driving, but I didn’t care. “You have to go back!”

Ninety seconds.

Pierre continued to ignore me as the scenery rocketed by. Almost screaming in desperation, I stared around us in desperation, wondering where exactly we were. We were heading north, which meant that somewhere near us…somewhere near us was the…

“Oh my gosh,” I murmured. “Pierre, you’re going to kill us!”
