After changing I head down stairs. The man hands Chris the gun as he examines it. Travis walks in unpleased.
"Feeling better?" The man grins.
"What the hell are you doing?" Travis asked.
"He's just showing me the gun, Dad." Chris waves it off.
"Finish packing the truck." Travis says sternly.
"It's not a big deal." Chris sighs.
"Chris. Go." Chris gets up and walks out the door. Madison turns the corner watching the scene as do I.
"The more the boy knows, the safer he'll be." The man says as he holds the gun.
"Uh-huh." Travis stares the man down.
"I didn't see the harm, Trav." Madison says.
"You know how I feel about guns." He sighs.
"The gun doesn't care how you feel about it." The man points out.
"That's enough."
"We ready to go?" Travis turns to Madison.
"Cars are loaded, yeah. I have one more thing to do." She mumbles. I head out the door and get in Madison's car. Nick was already sitting there. He didn't look so good.
"Nick, you don't look so good." I lean forward pressing my hand to his forehead. Burning hot.
"Your warm. You need to get some rest and liquids in you while we are on our way to the dessert."
"You know that's not what I need." He mumbles looking out the window watching Madison get in the car.
"I need a couple more. Mom. Please." Nick begs his mom for more oxy. That's what it is.
"Is that all we have?" He greeds over it.
"Yep. I gave the rest to Griselda." She says quietly.
"Why?" Nick asked angrily.
"She needs it."
"Mom, she's a stranger." He slams his back to the seat of the car.
"She's in pain."
"So am I."
"I know. I'm gonna help."
"I don't need you, Mom. I need my medicine." He says coldly.
"Nick stop! How dare you treat her that way while at a time like this. Its not always about you. You can't keep being selfish." I turn and look at him in the face.
"Gabrielle its fine." Madison says.
"Those are my meds. Brought here to me for me. Am I right?" He raises his voice.
"Its brought here for the needed." I stated.
"I am in need." He shouts leaning closer to me.
"So are others." I yell. He stares me down not saying a word.
"You have to understand that woman is in more pain then you are. Have you noticed you are taking more oxy. We are suppose to be getting off it. I've been doing fine a pill a day. You are taking at least 4 or 5." I say softly looking down at the floor boards.
"Bree, I'm trying. Its harder than what it looks. Me being at this longer than you have I get why its easier for you." He mumbles.
"Promise to try harder. Please. Not only for your family and me but for yourself. I've already lost Aneta. I'm not going to lose you too."
"You will never lose me. I promise you I will do my best." He moves closer to me and wraps and arm around my shoulder kissing my forehead.
"Alicia! Come on. We're going. Alicia, come on." Travis repeats. She comes out with her headphones on and her backpack.
"I heard you." She mutters.
"Let's go, huh?"
I had to pee." Alicia states. There was a buzzing sound in the air. I looked out the window as Madison starts the car and drives out following Travis. Its a helicopter.
"Do you think they sent help?" I asked.
"Who knows, maybe they didn't." Nick kicks his feet up.
"Maybe they are sweeping the area." Alicia singing along to the tune she played in her headphones.
"Whatever it is its not our problem anymore. We are heading to the dessert." We stopped at a stop sign and saw Mr. Tran parking his car with suitcases in his possession. That's why he hasn't been home.
"Patrick! Patrick. Patrick, wait. No. No, no, no, no." Madison repeats as we park the car. Madison gets out of the car and heads to the Trans. I unbuckle my seatbelt and run to the backyard. I could hear Nick calling after me but I followed Madison.
"Susan, I'm home. The airport's shut down. I drove all the way from Salt Lake. tried to call you, but, Susan?" I could hear Mr. Tran say.
"Bree get back here!" I run into the back yard and hear a gunshot. I stop dead in my tracks.
Mr. Tran cries over the body of Susan as she drops to the ground. What happened if Nick found me like that. I wouldn't want him to see me like this. Maybe peacefully dead but not shot on the spot or even letting him do it. Some men in suites came forward grabbing and pulling us away from Mr. Tran.
They line us up against the fence and then escorted us toward the front of the house. Their were military trucks parked out in the road. I could still hear the helicopter buzzing.
"Can you remove your hands. Please." I asked the guy that was gripping my arm a bit too tight.
"Hands off I don't liked to be grabbed." I shook free from his grasp.
"Feisty." He smirks then walks away as I walk to Madison and Travis. I look around to find Nick but couldn't find him. Strange.
"Folks, get back inside. We will come to you."
"The cavalry's arrived. It's gonna get better now." Travis exhales watching the military men leave their house.
