not safe

Feels like everything's different now. Instead of walking in your neighborhood expecting a safe and friendly environment. But all those things are different when you have a curfew. When the military comes to your neighborhood puts a fence up telling you the other side is either dead or unsafe. The best part, is when your supplies is coming. They bring in big trucks telling us we need to separate everything evenly.

"Wanna join me?" Nick winks over to me. He was on a floaty in the pool.

"I'm fine, I just need to get a little sun." I sit down in a chair next to the pool.

Of course Travis is taking this as a routine. Like everything is normal. But its not, it feels like the world might be coming to an end. I feel as if the military is not telling us everything. That whatever this is, its still going. Who knows, maybe I'm just over thinking.

"I found this on the counter. Who didn't take theirs?" Madison shows us the oxy pill.

"I took mine, I'm ready for the half pill." I stated. Madison nods her head in approval.

"Oh, yeah, I guess I forgot." Nick says. That's odd. He never forgets.

"Oh, you forgot?" Madison looks in my direction but I shrug my shoulders.

"Yeah. I guess I did." He takes the sunglasses off. Something isn't right.

"Okay, here it is." Madison holds the pill out.

"Oh, no, thanks. I'm good."

"I don't think that's the best idea." I remembered last time.

"Well, I got to kick it. That's the whole point, right?"

Nick, come on. Nick," Madison starts but Nick cuts her off.

"Look, give it to Griselda. She needs it more than I do. You said so yourself."

"I know what I said, but the point is to wean you off of it slowly. So it just doesn't, you know, happen again."

"I thought you'd be happy."

"I am happy, I just... Okay, well, if you need it, it's right here. Don't be a hero." Madison gets up and heads for the door.

"No chance of that. - Hey, Mom?"

"Yeah?" Madison turns to face Nick.

"Are you okay?"

"Enjoy your swim." She says then walks out. He ducks under the water then comes back up for air. I watch him as he gets back up in the float and lays down taking in the suns rays.

"I can feel your eyes burning a whole into me, what's wrong?"

"You never forget the meds. You never do. You are always hovering over someone for something." I lean forward slipping my shoes on.

"I guess everything is fine now. I can be sober." He shrugs his shoulders sliding the sunglasses back on.

"You remember what happened that night everything went down. You tried to be sober and couldn't take it. There is no way you can be sobering up and have no symptoms of withdrawal." I stand up and adjust my swim.

"Maybe you are spending to much time with my mom." He mutters.

"Or not enough." I say under my breathe as I walk to the supplies truck to get my stuff.

"Bree baby come on." Nick tries to stop me but I keep walking. I head over to the group of people surrounded by to the military trucks. I stand next to Alicia and Ofelia.

"Hey." I sighed.

"Hey, where is Nick?" Alicia looks over at me

"Swimming in a pool and not giving a damn about the world. You know, he says he "forgot" to take his pill. Then he declined to take it when Madison offered it."

"Really? How are the withdrawals?"

"He has none."

"That's not like him." She shakes her head.

"Exactly, that night he was off his shit for a few hours he was throwing up constantly. He couldn't even move and his temperature was hot. Now he hasn't taken a pill in the last 8 hours and he's doing fine swimming in a pool."

"He is on something, you and him can't just sober up whenever you want. You have to take it easy." She mumbles.

"Right? That's how he is explaining it to me. But out of the blue he thinks he can handle it. I'm now starting on the half pill." I roll my eyes.

"He's on something Bree. I just don't know what it could be. The fact that he's not accepting the pill, its the only medicine we have in the house." She places a hand on my shoulder.

"All right, listen up here, folks."

"As commanding officer of this detachment, I am proud to announce that we are infect free for a six mile radius around this perimeter. We are on the offensive. The tide has most definitely turned." Everyone cheers but Ofelia, Alicia and I. We stand their and watch.

"All right, command asked that I read from the following. Be advised, the DZ remains off-limits while Hazmat teams dispose of any bio-hazardous material."

"What bio-hazardous material?" A woman shouts out.

"Hey, I'm supposed to read this, you're supposed to listen, okay?" The Commanding officer replies. Rude much?

"When will you get the phones up?" A man ask but no response.

"Anyone attempting to compromise or circumvent the perimeter of this camp will be detained."

"Are we being relocated?" Another man ask.

"Sir, this is a secure position, so, no, you're gonna stay put. Curfew will remain in effect until further notice. The new health screening policy will continue. Sanitation, water treatment, and other services will return as we approach total containment."

"Sir, we need medicine. What about that?" Ofelia ask.

"We are working on that. So keep boiling that water. You will also find several iodine tablets in your weekly rations."  The commanding officer response back.

"Where are the people outside the fence? Where did you move them?" The crowd erupts into where the others went to.

"All right, folks, listen. You are in one of 12 safe zones south of the San Gabriels, okay? So you guys are the lucky ones. You guys-- you get to stay in your homes, ride this thing out, all right? So, relax, count your blessings, be nice. So I don't have to shoot you." The commanding officer says in a jokingly tone. To be honest, I don't think he was joking.

"What's your name, miss?" A man ask Alicia.

"Uh, Alicia Clark." She says.

The man hands her a box of supplies. The turns to me.

"Name miss?" He smiles at me.

"Gabrielle Toretto." I reply. He turns around and hands me a box of supplies. Non-perishable food items, a few bottles of water and a small bag of iodine tablets.

"Thanks." I mumble. I walk toward Alicia so the others can get their stuff.

"Hey, I'm going to head back to the house. You guys alright?" I turn and face Alicia. Ofelia was smiling and talking to the supplies guy.

"We will be fine, we'll meet you up there." Alicia nods her head to the house.

"See ya." I start my walk back to the house. Once I got back inside I set the supplies box down on the kitchen table.
