Incapacitate

(Wanda's POV)

I clutched Vision's chest as he held me in his arms, he was flying me to the identified Hydra base. The wind rushed against our skin, and blew my hair violently, I watched the buildings and people below us pass by in fast, blurry motions. Rhodes, and Sam followed behind us. As we approached, he slowed down, and began his approach to the roof. He landed, and we locked eyes, hesitating before he placed me gently on the cement rooftop. Sam coughed uncomfortably behind us, and that's what made me realize what position we were in; standing close together, my hands still resting on his chest, and his arm still wrapped around my waist. We quickly stepped away from each other, my cheeks flushing red. We each murmured apologies.

The plan was, I would enter through the roof and mentally incapacitate as many agents as possible. This would be draining. Vision opened the hatch that led to the stairwell, there was a guard at every floor, plus more in the rooms of each floor, and there were 3 floors. After I completed one floor the team would storm in, and physically incapacitate the agents. I stepped down the ladder, making my way into the stairwell as silently as I could.

The hatch door closed, and I was on my own. The lights all shut off, part of the plan that allowed me the element of surprise. I made my way down the first flight of stairs to the third floor, I could sense the guard's presence more than I could see him.

I reached into his mind, sending waves of my red hex into his brain

I reached into his mind, sending waves of my red hex into his brain. I reached into his fears and took hold, amplifying them exponentially. He dropped his gun, and clutched his chest, breathing frantically. I pushed him to the ground and he didn't resist, simply sitting against the wall murmuring about an unseen enemy.

I entered the the main part of the third floor, I sensed 13 people. I walked up to the closest target, a young scientist. I repeated the process of amplifying her fears, and her scream alerted the other people of my presence. Her shrill voice cut through the dark, silent place. I moved into the next target- a guard- and did the same thing, his panicked yells joined her screams in an eerie duet, my symphony of power. I repeated the same process with the other 11 people, I could feel my heart rate rising, and my breathing was becoming shallow. I was getting tired, but I shook my hands out, and carried on.

I made my way to the second floor, incapacitated the guard, and made my way inside the main chamber. 31 people. I decided against going through all of them one by one. I walked to the center of the room, and let my power erupt in all directions, it spread across the room in crimson tendrils. It seized each and every mind, I screamed as I made each of them chaotic with fear. Some collapsed, some simply stood unable to process what was happening.

"Wanda? Wanda, are you okay?" My brother's worried voice came in through the comms.

"Fine." I said. "I'm moving on to the bottom floor." I informed.

"We've cleared the third floor." He told me. "Be careful."

I could feel exhaustion seeping into my bones, and I could feel sweat forming on my forehead. I felt a warm trickle on my face, and I reached my hand up to my nose, only to find it was bleeding. Probably from using so much of my power at once. I pushed away my tiredness, and moved myself along.

I made my way down the steps for the last time. I was surprised to find that there was no guard for this floor. Surely, they knew I was here by now, wouldn't they have sent someone? I questioned internally.

I opened the door hesitantly, checking left and right for immediate signs of danger. I couldn't see anything in the dark. I reached out, sensing if anyone was here, there was only one presence but it was a lot stronger than the other presences.

The lights turned on suddenly, and I gasped. Over by the lights switch, was a face that haunted my nightmares. In my mind, this man practically served the devil.

Dr. List. Strucker's right hand man. The man that gave us our abilities. The one who experimented on us for years.

"Not expecting to see me again, Miss Maximoff?" He teased.

"I thought Stark killed you?" He took a step toward me, and I stepped back.

"He certainly tried, but obviously to no avail. I have made a few improvements as well." He said. He walked towards me, I flinched as he harshly gripped my face. I felt a sense of dread and panic fill my chest, and the edges of my vision went gray before I lost consciousness.

I awoke in a soft bed, with the feeling of cotton sheets surrounding me. I instinctively held my hands to my face, expecting to feel Dr. List's hands there, I gasped at the thought of my encounter, bolting upright in panic. I could feel my chest heaving as I grasped for breath. I felt hands reach for me, and I immediately tore them away from my body.

The initial shock subsided, and I observed my surroundings, I was wearing the same clothes, I was in the safe house in Ulyanovsk, the team was gathered at my bedside, and the hands that were reaching for me were Pietro's. I breathed a sigh of relief, wrapping my arms around Pietro.

"Wanda, what happened back there?" He pried gently.

"It was him. Pietro, it was him." I managed. I could see a look of shock pass over his features.

"Do you mean-"

"List. It was him. I swear, Pietro. I'm not crazy, he was there... And he had... abilities."

Tony joined the discussion, "That's not possible, I killed Dr. List in Sokovia."

"Apparently not," I interjected. "Listen, all I know, is when I went down to the first floor, there was only one person there, and it was Dr. List, he must be continuing his research here in Russia. Because he said he'd 'improved' himself, and then he touched me and everything went black." I recounted, with a deep breath.

"We were waiting for your signal, to move on to the first floor," Vision said. "When you didn't respond on comms, we went to search for you. We found you unconscious and alone, your skin was ashen and your nose was bleeding." He explained with a look of worry.

"I swear, he was there, and he's steering up his research again. Except, this time he's the test subject." I insisted.

"We believe you." The Captain assured.

"Wait, didn't he use Loki's sceptor to give you your powers?" Tony inquired.

"Yes, that was the key to the success and sustainability of our powers." I confirmed.

"Then how did he get powers without it?" Tony asked.

"I have no idea." I mused.

"Listen, you need rest. We all do. Let's pick this up in the morning. Good work on the mission today, especially you, Wanda." The Captain praised.

The team split up, everyone returning to their own rooms.

I was left alone with only the thoughts of my time with Hydra to accompany me.
