Book 1: Earth
Chapter 3: When destinies meet"So, do you like it here?" asked a smiling Makei and Fung's uncle.
No response. These few days, instead of the adrenaline of escaping, there had been a few calm quiet days. Calm on the outside only. On the inside, they had plenty of time to reflect on the past few days. One of their biggest worries that had formed was - what if the Dai Li storms to their house to arrest them of bending? Then- they and their father wouldn't be there. Only their poor mother.
The town of Ookowaya was undeniably quiet and sleepy. With much freedom, the town did not seem to wake fully until midday. The past few days, it seemed that the town had Makei and Fung uninterested as well. Their uncle was away most of the day, doing his work. Their auntie was either quietly washing up in the back room, or was popping in and out of her friends houses. Their cousin was older had gone to join the police force a year ago.
"Ah! Niece! Nephew! Good to have you here! Was what their uncle said when they arrived. He had cleared out his son's room and rolled two blankets on the hard floor for their bed. Most of the day the two spent time lying on their bed. Or rather, um....floor..... mat. They didn't even bother to play outside. After all, it was just a sleepy little town. No different from Katanu, was it?
This day, a sunny day was the same as the others. They had been at their uncles' for nearly a week. The two were lazily in their room. Strangely, out of the window they heard a small commotion and people cheering.
"Erghhhhh, what is it?!" Groaned Fung and he placed his hands over his ears.
Makei peeked over the window, which had a view of the street.
"Eh, um... There's a crowd of people on the street." The cheering got louder. Fung stood up and went towards the door.
"Im having a look."
"Wait-I'm coming too!" Makei went after Fung, who gad already rushed out of the door. Outside the cheering only sounded louder. It seemed like the quiet town had finally woken up. And
Fung walked to an elderly lady and asked,"excuse me ma'am, but what's going on?" The elderly lady let out a toothless smile.
"Oh, young one, the avatar's here!"
The avatar! They both gasped in shock. They had heard of the avatar before from their parents, but the idea of being so close to the avatar seemed distant. It was quite unexpected.
"So why would the avatar come here?" Makei whispered to Fung. The lady, who had heard over them smirked.
"I've heard she's here to master earthbending with our beloved master Pokku.
"MASTER POKKU?!?! He exclaimed. "I've heard him before- the greatest earthbender around, and he's here?! He lives right here in this village?!" He squealed. He probably would have fainted in excitement......
"Yes, your right," smiled the lady, "he is one of the most well regarded earth benders around. He's one of the best-if not the best." As soon as she said that," she left, walking towards the direction the avatar was approaching.
Out of the corner of her eye, Makei caught a glimpse of. The avatar. She was waving and had an astonished expression on her face. She had short brown hair that went down to her shoulders, blowing in the wind. She had striking blue eyes. She was wearing what seemed like the traditional water tribe clothes. An ocean blue coat with patterns of animal fur, baggy blue pants and large boots. She looked not much older than herself. Next to her was an elderly woman, with grey hair and wrinkles. Her back was crouched.
