It was only the first week of kindergarten, and Jean and Eren had already gotten off to a bad start. Jean, his hair long, shaggy, and a light brown color, was great. He made friends easily, and quickly, making close friends with the small freckled boy Marco.
The teacher, Hanji, had made the mistake of putting Jean and Eren next to each other. Assuming that Jean's bright mood and ability to get along with people would help Eren branch out and make friends. Eren only had Armin, a little blond boy with a bowl cut.
They started the day by making name-tags. Hanji passed out 4 small pieces of colored construction paper for each person at a pod. Eren looked down at the paper, studying the colors for the one he wanted. As a bright red piece caught his attention, the boy next to him snatched it up.
"Hey!" Eren yelled, looking at Jean with fire in his eyes. "I was going to take that!"
"Too late," Jean shrugged, and started snipping away at the paper. Armin looked at Eren and smiled sympathetically.
He didn't talk much, he was embarassed by the braces he had on his upper teeth. Meanwhile, Marco, sitting next to Armin and across from Jean, grinned a wide, holey grin. He was missing a lot of teeth, and had a slight lisp when he spoke.
"That'ths okay, Eren! You can have my piece," Marco said, offering a dull blue color.
Eren pulled the paper from the freckled boy hastily and started slicing the paper into the size he wanted.
After they had their name tags cut out, they had to write their names down on them. Marco's name was flawless, Armon had a few letters backwards, but legible, and Eren's was all over the place, consisting of upper and lower case letters, jumbled all over.
Eren studied Jean's name and worked out their pronounciation. "Jeh-ee-anne. Gene."
Jean put his crayon down and matter-of-factly looked at Eren. "Actually, it's pronounced John. It's a French name!"
Eren looked wide-eyed at him, and his mouth hung open slightly where you could see tiny teeth in disarray. "So...like a french fry?"
Jean looked at Eren, losing his small, six year old patience. "No! I'm not a french fry!"
Eren stuck his tongue out. "You look like one,"
Jean huffed and turned back to his name tag. He turned it around and wrote on the back, "I hat Eren,", and flipped it back over before anyone could see.
When it came time for Hanji to put their name tags on, she had to flip them over to put the safety pin in. Jean noticed this quickly, and started panicking. As Hanji got to him, he placed the card on his desk and put his hand over it with as much pressure as possible.
"Jean, I need to see that!" Hanji beamed enthusiastically.
He shook his head fiercly, and Hanji easily lifted Jean's hand off of it. After a few seconds of reading the card she tutted. "Jean, I'm going to have to call your mother now to tell her what you wrote,"
Jean's eyes widened horrifically and he started bawling, catching the attention of his classmates, and Eren next to him started laughing, while Armin and Marco stared with concern.
~*~*~
Eren's laughter at Jean's crying resonated now, ten years later, just as much as it did then. The red flush of Jean's face also stuck through the years as well.
"Eren," Jean moaned. "Stop, that's a bad story."
Armin's eyes lit up as he remembered the day too, clutching one of Eren's pillows to his chest. "Jean, didn't you pee your pants that day too?"
Jean groaned.
