I was sitting in the recoding room messing around on the piano. Then she just walked in and sat on the bench next to me. She looked at the song I was playing and she smiled. "I love this song." She smiled. She started playing the intro and looked at me.

"And all I remember was his back. Walking towards the airport leaving us all in his past. I traveled 1500 miles to see him. I begged him to want me, but he didn't want it.
But piece by piece you collected me up off the ground when he abandon things.
Piece by piece you filled the holes that he burned in me at six years and I know, you never walk away, you never ask for money, you take care of me, you love me. Piece by piece you restored my faith that a man could be kind and a father could stay."

I gently smiled back at her as I quickly realized she had written up her own version of the song. I placed my hands on the keys and played along.

"And all of her words, they fell flat. The second I made something of myself she wanted to come back. But her love was never free, it had to be earned. Back then I had nothing she needed so I was worthless.
But piece by piece you collected me up off the ground when she abandon me yeah, piece by piece you filled the holes that she left in me at five years old and I know, you'd never walk away, you never ask for money, you take care of things cuz, you love me.
Piece by piece you restored my faith that a girl can be kind and a mother could stay."

She smiled at me as she placed her hands on the keys once more.

"Piece by piece I fell far from the tree, I will never leave you like he left me."
"And you will never have to wonder your worth, cuz unlike her I'm gonna put you first."

And right there we made a promise. A moment I was so happy to have had. Something I can't forget.

"And you know, I'll never walk away, I'll never break your heart. I'll take care of things cuz I love you. Piece by piece you've restored my faith that people can be kind and parents should be great."
