I didn't tell Dipper about the journal when we got back to the attic to go to bed.

Something about the whole situation just seemed odd, it felt better to wait for the right time to tell him about it.

In the meantime I decided to look through it.

It was even more worn than Dipper had described it to me. The pages were faded so much I couldn't read the text at all. I finally gave up on it and hid it under my mattress before I went to sleep that night.

. . . . . . . .

I didn't get to sleep for long. It felt like I had only had my eyes closed for a few minutes when Mabel woke me up. She was already dressed in shoes, jeans and a hot pink jacket with her hair braided down her back.

Dipper was sitting on the edge of his bed rubbing his eyes and grumbling, "Mabel? What're you doin' up here so late?" Except he was so tired you could barely understand what he was saying.

"Wendy's waiting for us outside! She says she has a surprise!" Mabel exclaimed, "hurry up and get dressed, we'll be waiting downstairs."

And with that she disappeared down the dark stairway.

Dipper and I exchanged hesitant looks, but pulled on our clothes anyways. No matter how much I desperately wanted to sleep, it was a basic rule of life to go along with whatever crazy thing Mabel suggested. As Wendy once said, it's what makes life worth living.

We found Mabel and Wendy waiting outside by the golf cart. When I asked Wendy why we were taking the golf cart when she could just drive us in an actual car she replied "It's a tradition, don't question it."

I can't believe we managed to fit all four of us in. Mabel sat shotgun next to Wendy while Dipper and I were crammed in the backseat. It wasn't as awkward of a ride as I thought it was gonna be, we talked and laughed the entire ride.

Wendy wouldn't tell us where we were going, and it's not like we could even guess. It was too dark to even see past the headlights that shone on the pavement.

I hadn't checked the time before we left but I guessed that it was sometime around midnight when we pulled to a stop by a chain link fence with a large sign that read PUBLIC POOL CLOSED (But I assumed that we were gonna ignore the "closed" part)

"Uh, Wendy, what're we doing here?" Dipper asked timidly stepping out of the cart and stretching his arms and legs.

Wendy laughed, "What'dya think?" She leaned towards us and pretended to whisper,"Here's a hint, we're breaking in!"

Huh. Night swimming. It sounded pretty cool, like something some mischievous teenagers would do in a movie. But then again I guess right then we were a bunch of mischievous teenagers.

"Isn't that illegal?" Dipper asked again. He sounded unsure but I could tell that he was secretly dying to do this.

Mabel shoved past him as she replied, "who cares? This is gonna be awesome!" she immediately climbed the fence and jumped to the other side.

Wendy whooped and hollered, "YEAH! GO MABES!" and did just the same.

Mabel was laughing as she kicked off her shoes and jumped right into the fluorescent blue water. Wendy jumped in after her, sending a wave of cold water spraying the pavement around us.

I began to climb, but when I saw Dipper was still standing there, I motioned for him to follow. (He could really be a stick in the mud sometimes) When I got on the other side I turned and found that Dipper was still standing behind the fence.

"Come on, man, it's just a little fence! Don't let your dreams be dreams!" I said, trying to lighten the mood. I wasn't really sure about this either, but I was determined to make sure Dipper enjoy himself for once.

Dipper stared off at Mabel and Wendy for a moment before finally shaking himself out of the trance and climbing up behind me.

We jumped at the same time, our feet hitting the pavement simultaneously.

I leapt and jumped cannon-ball style without bothering to remove my jacket or my shoes. My skin felt numb when I hit the ice cold water. I resurfaced and looked up to see Dipper staring at me like I was crazy.

"You still scared?" I asked with a teasing smile.

"I'm not scared." He replied flatly.

"Then come on in, the water's great!"

"This is a dumb idea."

"You're a dumb idea!" Mabel shouted. Wendy laughed in reply.

Dipper said nothing but crossed his arms and leaned against the supply bin. He didn't notice Wendy slowly creeping up behind him with a wide grin on her face as she shoved Dipper off the edge and jumped in after him.

When Dipper's head popped out of the water he looked shocked, angry, and dumbfounded all at the same time- like he just discovered a new emotion. I guess that's what this moment felt like.

I mean, we were breaking into a public pool in he middle of the night and splashing around like it was nothing- and it was fun.

As we all swam and kicked up water, it felt exhilarating. The pool lights lit up around us like we were in our own little bright bubble in the middle of the dark.

                         . . . . . . . .

What surprised me the most was the fact that we didn't get caught. We were still laughing even as we pulled into the Mystery Shack's driveway.

Our wet clothes were bagging from the weight of the water and clung to our skin. The freezing night air didn't help with trying to keep warm. We said our goodbyes and finally separated to head to bed.

I was exhausted so by the time my head hit the pillow, I was out like a light with no time between being a wake and falling asleep to think back and reflect on my day- or the fact that I was hiding a secret from my own brother, and it was hiding under the mattress I was sleeping on.
