As It Turned Awry

When I was always an option
To those I put first on my list
And I thought I'll stay at the bottom
The least favorite
But one day, you said 'Hi'
Next, you checked on me
When morning was nigh
And as the sun rose high
Until the moon summoned the tide
And I thought 'twas just temporary
Or triggered by some curiosity
I was hold momentarily
And the care was consistent
You showed how pure the intent
It was so hard to believe
That I am somebody's preference
And someone so significant
But I want all your pain
That's what I know
To be an option and to be demeaned
I know one day you will be awakened
And realized I should be lying down still
Maligned and abused
Because you were just curious then
My cover was worn out but never peeled
That I spoke volumes but not transparent
I treaded a path covered with mud
No traces, no gaps
My pace was slow
And you were at the end of the road
With open arms and bleeding wrists
And then I knew
I own somebody's soul
Or so I thought
And then I was cut open again
With third degree burn this time
And that, I was never the same.
