"So she just hasn't picked up?"
"Yeah, I'm really worried. Blair can't make it on her own in these types of situations."
"Blair has been in these situations before?"
"No! I just mean really panicked and unexpected times," I sigh and put my head in my hands.
"I can't tell you she's going to be fine, Kate. And I'm sorry about that. But in life or death situations people react on instinct a lot quicker so there's a good chance she's okay and maybe she dropped her phone on her way to safety," he reasons but my heart won't settle.
"Imagine one of your best friends was out there," I snap at him in frustration. His reasoning is completely right but it feels like he's not actually realizing the seriousness of this.
"Listen, I'm trying to help you but whatever," he grumbles and sinks back in his seat.
"I'm sorry it's just so nerve wracking."
"Yeah I get it," Noah puts a hand on my shoulder and sits me down on a chair.
"Lets do math to pass time and help you calm down," he states and starts opening up his backpack.
"Okay," I sigh and try to clear all negative thoughts from my fuzzy mind.
---
"Do you get it now?"
"No."
"Noah it's pretty fucking simple you just divide 163.4 by everything and then find out how far the sun is from Neptune!"
"How in the world does this part of the problem have anything to do with 163.4," he groans.
"It doesn't," I shrug. Standing up and looking at the clock I realize it's a half hour into 9 o clock and I think I already have a few gray hairs.
I pull out my phone and check my messages. Still no contact from Blair. My heart starts to race again and I pace around the section of tables. What's wrong? Is anyone with her? Is she locked up in some stall? Is she dead? Is she out of the school? Is she safe and sound but dropped her phone?
The thoughts race through my mind as the sirens blast in the back. The red and blue lights are flashing through the windows and I quickly dial 911.
"Hi, what's your emergency?"
"Hi, my name is Kate Campano I'm a senior at Cresstim High and we are currently in lockdown because of a gunshot going off. My friend Blair hasn't answered her cell and it's been over an hour since we've heard any contact from her," I rush out the words.
"Yes, we have received this information before from a few other girls in your school, can you describe to me what Blair looks like please just for finer details."
"Brown pixie cut, green eyes, really petite body. She'll respond to the name Pixie so if you want to call her that because only my friends and I know we call her that," I explain.
"Thank you and police have been dispatched to the school, stay safe and don't attract too much attention to where you're hiding okay?"
"Why aren't the police doing anything?"
"Hostages. And the shooter placed bombs at certain doorways so when opened they will explode," the dispatcher states.
"Please help Blair," I shiver in fear and the woman promises to help and says goodbye.
Noah takes my hand in sympathy and I quickly push away.
"I need to go for a walk or something," I mutter and start walking in between the book shelves.
