"Go fish."
"You are cheating," he hisses at me.
"No, I am not now Go Fish," I hiss right back at him. I am cheating but losing at Go Fish is not what I am up for.
"Yes you are," he tells me and makes a move before I can stop him. He grabs the cards from my hand and looks at them before I could protest.
"Oh, would you look at that. I need this card and this card and oh wow I needed this card a long time ago," he starts making pairs and I watch as my whole life crumbles.
"Whatever, I give up," I mutter and start shuffling the cards
"I've paid my dues, time after time. I've done my sentence, but committed no crime," Noah starts to sing We are the Champions by Queen as I shuffle the deck again and again.
"Yeah we get it, I cheated blah blah blah," I roll my eyes and sit up on a chair as Noah finishes off the song. Slightly out of breath, he sits down across from me and puts his head in his arms and tries to catch his breath.
"How is possible that you are breathing so heavily after singing?"
"Hey, it takes a lot out of you," he points at me after getting control over his breath and heart rate.
"Okay, bud."
"Shut up, Kate. You are just mad because I am better than you at card games," he mocks me.
"I wouldn't go that far. Let's play spit," I smirk. I am known to be unconquerable at spit. Let's just hope Noah doesn't defeat me.
---
"We will, we will rock you," I sing in his face after winning our fourth game of spit.
"And that also proves that Queen songs go with almost anything," smiling, I sit back down in my chair and put the cards back in the deck-holder-ma-bobber. What is the container that holds cards called anyway?
"I'll have to test that theory, let me say a few scenarios and you say how Queen songs would fit. Sound good?" he asks.
"No, let's do that with any song for any scenario we could think of, okay? Sounds fun and time consuming so let's do it. When I look back up at the clock we only have twenty minutes left in the hour.
"Okay, I'll start. You are stuck at the top of a roller coaster midway through a loop," he gives me.
"Easy, Help by The Beatles," I answer quickly,"my turn okay you find out your girlfriend of three years is cheating on you. What song do you sing to her?"
"Gives You Hell by the All-American Rejects," he replies. That was a good one. We continue this game for another twenty minutes until we get to an unusually odd one he asks.
"You want to kiss this person you are starting to like but you don't know if you should," he gives me and his demeanor changes from funny to nervous and embarrassed. Holy mother of pearl he is saying he likes me. Is he talking about me or does he want my advice through a song? He likes me? I don't know man, I blush as I quickly try to think of an answer and finally I manage to blurt out," Latch by Sam Smith, acoustic version."
"Really? You think so?" he leans closer.
"Yeah, I really do," I whisper and he closes his eyes and I do too. My heart starts to beat faster and my sweaty palms clench on my shirt. Fuck what do I do. Snap out of it Kate you have kissed a guy before, you have had sex with a guy for Pete's sake! Why am I so nervous then? Oh shut it Kate and just kiss the guy, you haven't kissed anyone and you need some love.
Both sides of my subconscious fight with each other as he continues to pull me closer to him. Finally, I feel his breath against my lips and I pucker my lips. His lips brush over mine and they press down on mine for a split second until we here another bang from outside the hall, this time much closer to our vicinity. Noah and I pull apart and he pulls me under a nearby table. We both remain as still and as quiet as possible and I suddenly hear the door hand jiggle. My sharp intake of breath doesn't go unnoticed and Noah takes my hand in a reassuring grasp as the handle continues to move back and forth. Hearing the struggle of this person is extremely frightening and I close my eyes to calm myself. I press my face into Noah's shoulder and smell his scent. He smells like cinnamon and lavender. Eventually the person on the other side of the door backs off.
That is until, we hear a loud bang against the door. And then again. Noah quickly takes action and shuffles out from under the table. I follow him and watch as he packs our stuff and takes the bags in one hand and my hand in the other. In a numb state I follow Noah to the very back of the library, the sound of banging growing fainter and fainter.
I soon realize we are walking towards the teacher's conference room in the far corner of the library. Noah leads me inside, closes the door and locks it. The windows fill the room with natural light and I see the faint glow of police sirens below us.
"Have anything important in here?" he asks me as he jiggles open a window.
"My phone, my charger m-" he quickly cuts me off. "well take them out and bring them with you."
"Where am I going?"
"Hide in that cabinet there," he says as he grabs a few things from his own bag.
I open the cabinet and find it full of food. Then we hear the library door bang open. I start to throw all the boxes of food in the trash and shove them in other places. The two of us will be squished but it is life or death right now.
"Noah," I say shakily as he throws our bags over the open window. They land with a light thud and I climb in to the space. Pushing myself as far into the corner as possible. Noah slides in after me and pulls the two doors shut.
"Noah," I say again and this time he shushes me and grabs my hand. I close my eyes and try to relax but really? Who can at this moment?
The person's loud footsteps can be heard through the library as they draw nearer and nearer. All of a sudden I get a call from. Blair? My ringtone blares and I shut off the ringer as quick as possible. The steps stop. This person has her phone and is currently trying to find me. They have been reading the messages, seeing what room we are all in. Holy shit. Damn it Blair, we always told her she should put on a pass code.
"Fuck, he's coming! Jump and go," Noah shouts and I look at him like he is crazy but quickly latch on to his plan.
The steps start up in a run this time and Noah curses under his breath as the door handle jiggles again and again. This time, the shooter breaks through a lot easier than the first time and with no ramming against the door. I close my eyes take a deep breath and start praying as tears run down my cheeks. Noah grips my hand tighter but makes no other movement so the person outside can not hear our shuffling.
I brace myself for whatever is to come and continue to pray. The man stops his pacing and everything goes quiet. The birds stop chirping, the sirens stop blaring. My body goes numb as I hear the steps draw closer and closer to where we are hiding. God please save us.
