"Damn it," the man breathes. He took the bait. I don't dare to move my head in anticipation out of fear that any movement will trigger a sound and cause our cover to be blown. I close my eyes and if possible, squeeze Noah's hands tighter and tighter. What seems to be like hours passes and all we can hear is his heavy breathing.
"Fuck!" he shouts and throws one of the table chairs. My throat releases a tiny whimper and Noah pulls my hand closer to him for some comfort but there is nothing that can stop my heart from beating.
"Your friends is dead by the way!" he shouts angrily out the window. My throat goes to release a cry but Noah clamps down on my hand harder. A tear rushes down my cheek and I fight to keep myself from breathing too hard.
His footsteps finally start to fade as he walks angrily away and then the bell rings. We stay in the same place for another ten minutes just to be sure and then Noah opens the door slightly. After checking that the room is clear, he climbs out.
"Stay here, Kate," he whispers. I grab his wrist quickly.
"Where the fuck do you think you are going, mister?" I hiss.
"To see if he is really gone, if you don't stay here I will throw you out of this window, ok?" he threatens.
"No," I say defiantly and crawl out but, he stops me midway and gently pushes me back in.
"Kate, please," he pleads and the look in his eyes stops me from struggling as I slump back in my cupboard and he closes the door.
"I swear on my fucking heart if I hear one noise too loud and you are dead I will bring you back to life and kill you, you asshole. Now be safe," I hiss through the crack of the door.
I wait and bite at my nails until they are down to the nub, then I start pulling at my hair. The bell has rung, signaling another period ending and I try to find the familiar sound warming but I am just too stressed. Poopers, what's going on? Why hasn't he come back? Holy mother of poop where is he oh my gosh he is dead and dead and I'll be dead soon if he is dead and he can't die. He's going to get a fancy scholarship. Without a second thought I climb out of the little compartment and swiftly start walking to find Noah.
A gun shot goes off too close for comfort and I start sprinting. When I reach the library entrance Noah is at the door, breathing heavily and leaning up against it. Random objects shoved against the door and a belt wrapped around the handles.
"I thought I told you to hide?"
---
"So, how did you think of doing that backpack thing?" I question fifteen minutes later, after we are calmed down and camped ourselves back into the teacher's room.
"The Call," he states, I look at him funny and he nods his head. Noah actually means he saved our lives from a movie? Well, I am not complaining.
"And where did that gunshot go off?"
"Classroom across from us," he states and shudders, probably hating himself for not being able to save our peers.
I take the next few minutes to compose myself and let my mind comprehend what has been going on as Noah figures out if we could survive the jump.
"See, the thing is, we are too far for the cops to hear or see us because they are more heavily covering the entrances and exits. So, if say you fell, I wouldn't be able to drag you to safety without risking it so much, therefore we wouldn't even be able to make it out alive," he says more to himself but I continue listening so I could fill the holes in this plan.
"Well, it is the second story, so that means there is a class beneath us, which probably has the blinds closed so there is that but the fence is too close so that it might slice us in half, also too high to climb over fast enough, we have all tried, so we would need to run to the entrance but that is too long," I muse.
"We could also, run down the hall, get to the stairs and get to the closest exit" he looks at me and my face expression alone shoots down the idea. Noah sighs, closes the windows and opens one of the teachers snack boxes. Pulling out gummies he passes me a package of Scooby-Doo themed package. I find it odd that our teachers are eating this but this would definitely be what I would have as an adult.
"Let's just wait it out, Noah. Anyway we turn is a danger but right now, he wouldn't think to make another trip to the library and that is what we have to hope for," I pour the gummies down my throat and Noah looks at me curiously.
"What?" I say with a small blush, wishing I could take back what I said.
"Nothing," he shakes his head. Weird, again.
"Well, what should we do now?"
He shrugs and I sigh. I can't help myself from looking at the door every few seconds just to check. Our only problem is that the guy might get suspicious that the library door is boarded up in one thousand ways and that his whole path to the door is barricaded by multiple obstacles.
"Twenty questions?" he suggests.
"Cliche. Would you rather?"
"Are we 12? Kiss, Marry, Kill?"
"Oh, I like that one. Okay Megan Fox, Mila Kunis and Jennifer Lawrence," I say thoughtfully.
"Kill, Jennifer Lawrence, Marry Mila Kunis and Kiss Megan Fox," he states," Okay, Joe Biden, Denzel Washington and ... Me."
"Marry Joe, Kill Washington and ugh I guess kiss you," I reply grudgingly. Noah smirks.
"Oh! I am absolutely flattered Kate. Best compliment ever." he sighs and fans himself dramatically. I giggle and push his shoulder.
"You are extremely annoying," I grunt and roll my eyes after my little giggle fit. He gives me a cute little charming smile and I quickly look away, blushing.
"Okay, my turn. Angelina Jolie, Kendall Jenner and Anna Kendrick," I tell him.
"Oh, c'mon. When I say me you are supposed to put your name in the next option. It's called playful flirting Kate," he looks at me condescendingly and shakes his head at me.
"Fine, then add me in," I answer him defiantly.
"Okay, Kiss Kendall Jenner, Marry Angelina Jolie and Kill you," he smiles.
"See now that's why I didn't add myself. I knew you were just going to kill me off and it would be obnoxiously embarrassing after I just said I would kiss you if you killed me off. And that is why I did not add myself in the first place," I point my finger at him as I stand up and walk to the other side of the room full of petty shame and a slight pinch in my heart. He laughs as he stands up and walks over to me.
"Katie-poo," he croons and I roll my eyes and look away from him," you know I was just joking right. I mean why wouldn't I want to kiss you?"
"Well..." I start to think of random reasons as to why and he stops me by cupping my face with his two hands.
"I would have said married you even but I don't think I could make you cheat on Joe Biden for all the money in the world," he breathes with a small little grin.
"I would never, Joe Biden is amazing," I let out a little laugh and his smile widens.
"Well, I guess I would just have to settle for a kiss then," Noah leans a little closer.
"I guess so, I hope Joe doesn't get upset," I frown.
"I don't think he will mind one bit," he says and presses his lips down on mine. I smile into the kiss and place my hands on Noah's shoulders. His hands remain on my face until we reluctantly pull apart for air and then he slides his hands down to my hips.
"I should've said marry you before Biden could snatch you up," he jokes and I smile and reply,"Joe has had my heart since the beginning of time. Sorry."
And he is kissing me again and I try not to think about kissing Joe Biden but I can't help it and now my teeth are kind of just pressed against his lips as I laugh uncontrollably.
