Chapter 24

Harry had no desire to get out of bed the next morning.

After Kate had run off, the night before, he hadn't feel like being in a noisy public place, let alone in the place where he'd just fucked her, so he left. He'd walked back to where his car was, but knowing he wasn't sober enough, he'd grabbed some sugary drinks to help absorb some of the alcohol and sat in the dark, on the beach until he felt that it was safe to drive.

The sight that welcomed him at home, didn't make him felt any better.

He'd stood in the doorway to his bedroom staring at the neatly made bed. Kate had taken the time to smooth the pillows and the wrinkles from the cover. To look at it, you would never have known what had gone on in the bed only a couple of nights ago. It was almost as if she had erased herself from the room.

That was of course until he buried his face in the pillow. Her scent was still there.

Sleep had finally come to him a little before dawn, but now just a couple of short hours later, he was wide awake and staring at the ceiling, lost in a swirl of thoughts about Kate and the past week they had spent together. He blinked back to reality when he heard the kids outside on the school bus that was picking up Ketut and Mary.

Lying in bed was getting him nowhere. He had to get up and go into town. Since he'd been with Kate, he'd not spent a lot of money – except for his crazy night out – but he still needed to work, or at least try and get some work to help with his finances for the rest of the wet season.

A shower and new clothes had him feeling fresher, although no matter how fresh he felt, he was still hollow. She had carved a giant hole in him, and that, he didn't know how to fill.

Wayan was at his usual spot on the beach setting up when Harry stopped in. He wasn't staying though, it was too close to Kate and the last thing he wanted right then was for her to walk over and run into him, or for him to see her by the pool. He'd go up to Kuta Square and try and get some work near there.

Wayan filled Harry in on the rest of his night before Harry returned to his car and went down to the Square.

Although the rain was holding off, there wasn't a huge amount of foot traffic and most of his queries for work came back with a frim, 'No thanks'.

Just as he was about to give up and move on, the mother from the previous week approached him, with her husband and the demonic child in tow. "Harry." She beamed at him. "We've been looking out for you for days."

Harry forced a smile to his face. "I was caught in the floods at home. I haven't been in the city for a few days."

"Floods?" She was truly clueless and more than a little self absorbed.

"The rain caused local flooding in some villages in the mountains. That's where I live, so I was stuck for a while."

"Oh my." She exclaimed.

Harry offered his hand to her husband. He didn't mind him. "Harry. I saw that on the news the other night. I didn't realise you would be effected."

"Well, lucky for us you're back." The wife gushed before Harry could comment. "We would like to take a trip to Nusa Dua tomorrow. Do you think you could manage it?"

The last thing Harry wanted was to be anywhere near her and her horror of a child, but the trip over wasn't that long and once there he could occupy his time, well away from any temptation to seek out Kate. And it was a much needed job, and one which tipped quite well, if last time was anything to go by.

"Sure." Harry smiled. Just as he was about to arrange a time, she cut him off.

"And this afternoon we were thinking about going to the zoo to see the baby tigers. Will you take us there?"
