Chapter 17 – Stare Down
Miyuki assumed Naruto also took notice the square “rock” because he quickly turned around at the sound of shuffling. Naruto narrowed his eyes but said nothing as he turned back around. He walked a few steps with the fake rock following after him. Naruto whipped around and pointed at the box. “Psych! Faked you out, rock!!!” Naruto shouted, “Little hint…No rock has perfect angles, perfect corners, and eye holes. Kind of a big clue.”
Three kids lifted up the box and crawled out from under it. Miyuki recognized one of the kids as being Sarutobi Konohamaru, the Third Hokage’s grandson. “Leave it to the man I have acknowledged as being almost my equal! Your skills rival my own!!” Konohamaru exclaimed.
Miyuki raised an eyebrow at the young boy’s words. Naruto brought his arms behind his head nonchalantly. “Oh, it’s you guys. Uhhh…What’s up with the goggles?”
Konohamaru laughed as he readjusted the goggles on his forehead. “You’re our idol, right? We’re copying the style you used to wear.” Now that Miyuki thought about it, she did remember Naruto used to wear a pair of goggles but replaced them with his forehead protector after he graduated.
“Okaaaay…”Naruto dragged out.
“What do you mean, ‘okay’? Suddenly too cool for school big guy?” Konohamaru pointed at Naruto angrily. Miyuki giggled at the scene. Kaminari also let out her laugh from her resting place on Miyuki’s shoulders.
Miyuki walked up to the small group as Naruto asked the little girl of the group, “What do you want from me?”
“We’ll show you, boss! Can you come now?”
Miyuki titled her head as she turned to Naruto. “Boss?”
Naruto scratched the back of his with a faint blush. “Eh…It’s just something they call me…” He then turned his attention back to the children. “Nope! I have to train!”
The children frowned. “But…But you promised to play ninja with us!! Right?”
Naruto’s eyes widened and he sneaked a quick glance at Miyuki to see what her reaction was to what Konohamaru said. But, Miyuki was just standing there smiling at the three children. “Oh, yeah…was that today?”
Miyuki turned to Naruto in disappointment. “Naruto, you promised to play with these children…yet you forgot? You’re not trying to back out are you?”
“N-No! Of course not! It’s just…I really do need to train, Miyuki-chan!”
Miyuki crossed her arms as she stared Naruto down. “Training can wait. You made a promise, didn’t you? Do you want to break it? Imagine how they’ll feel if they find out the person they look up too ditches them. They’ve obviously been looking forward to this.”
“Yeah! What the pretty girl said!” Konohamaru agreed. His two friends nodded in agreement as well.
Naruto was about to answer when another voice interrupted. “So…just what is a ninja doing ‘playing ninja’, hmm?” Everyone turned to see a still highly depressed Sakura moping just a few feet away. Of course, Miyuki and Kaminari had already know the girl was there seeing as they had heard and smelt her approach. The two were a little more interested in the conversation Naruto was having with the children.
Konohamaru moved so he could get a better look at Sakura. Everyone just stared at each other for a moment. This is getting a little awkward, Miyuki thought to herself until Konohamaru broke the silence. “Hey, big guy, who’s the babe?” Did he just call Sakura-chan a babe? Konohamaru suddenly looked as if a light bulb went off in his head. He tugged at Naruto’s jacket to get his attention. “Hey, big guy, seeing as how you’re so smart and suave and all…The hottie...I can tell…you and she are…..you knowwww! Right?”
