Chapter 10
I woke up to my phone ringing loudly and my head pounding from last night. I smiled when I remembered the night before. I reached out to the other side of the bed, searching for Jake, before remembering I had come home last night so my parents wouldn't worry about me.
My head throbbed slightly as I reached my hand to my bedside table, wanting more time in bed. I looked up when I couldn't find my phone; I must have left it at Jake's. I gasped at what I saw, panic rising within me.
It wasn't my phone.
It was the fire alarm.
Thick smoke filled the room. I rolled out of my bed, getting as low to the ground as possible. I pulled my cover on top of me, not wanting to breathe in the smoke. My lungs were already burning as I crawled the short distance to the door. I stood up, keeping the cover over my mouth, I opened the door and quickly slammed it again as the unbearable heat hit me. Flames were everywhere, and it wouldn't be long until they were in my room too. I looked around, hoping there was another exit, but knowing there wasn't.
Hope filled my body as my eyes settled on the window. I raced over to the other side of my room, trying not to breathe in the thick smoke. I tugged at the bottom of the window, but it wouldn't open. I took a deep breath, forgetting about the smoke and pulled with all my strength.
Nothing happened. The window was locked.
I slumped to the ground, as tears started flowing down my face. The realisation slowly started sinking in; I was going to die.
Jake's POV
"Jake honey you need to get up!" I heard my mum call from beside me as she gently shook me.
I slowly opened my eyes and looked at the time. It was 4:35 AM. What the hell? I only went to bed at 3:15 last night.
"Why are you waking me up at this time?" I moaned, pulling a pillow over my head.
"Jake, don't panic but there's a fire" My mum said, trying to pull me up but she needn't have bothered. I sat bolt upright and looked around. I couldn't smell smoke.
"We need to get out of here" I said panicking, why was my mum so calm.
"Jake, it's not our house, it is Lydia's" She said, her eyes full with worry. My mouth fell open and my heart started trying to jump out of my chest. My whole throat dried up as a lump formed at the back of it.
I jumped up and grabbed a hoody from the end of my bed, which I had left there last night.
I sprinted down the stairs and dived out the front door, not bothering to shut it behind me. I gasped when I saw Lydia's house, flames surrounding it and bursting out two of the windows.
She couldn't still be in there, could she? The street was filled with neighbours and fire engines. I pushed my way to the front searching for Lydia. She had to be here somewhere. My eyes settled on Lydia's mum who was crying in front of the tape which was holding back the crowds.
I slipped under it,
"Sorry, you can't pass the tape!" A man in fireman gear called to me, trying to hold me back.
"I'm family!" I growled, without even thinking as I dodged past him and made my way to Lydia's family. I looked around, where was Lydia? Had she had to gone to hospital?
I looked at her mums face and that is when she hit me. She wasn't here. She wasn't at the hospital. She was still inside the house. I felt tears fill my eyes as I yelled,
