                                   FIVE

Along the way, Mr Beaver had given Edmund a dagger for him to defend himself. He said that it was from High King Peter, Edmund's older brother which meant that he must be in Narnia, with Aslan.

"How come he gets to have a weapon?" Jess raised his eye brow.

"Well, he IS a King of Narnia, and the son of Adam." Mr Beaver replied dryly. "And the dagger's magical. It's only for Kings and Queens."

The four of them stopped in their tracks when they were greeted by the frozen ground that looked as if a single step could crack the entire area.

"Mr Beaver, I don't suppose you know another way around this?" Edmund asked anxiously.

"I'm afraid not, King Edmund." Mr Beaver answered, shaking his head.

Jess gulped. "It looks like it'll crack if we step on it." He said, gazing at the frozen ground where it already had some small cracks to it.

"Maybe we should run," Leslie suggested positively, flashing a smile to everyone.

"It'll just put more pressure on the ice, young girl. I don't think it'd be best if go all together at once."

"Wait, so are you saying we need to go one by one?" Jess asked in disbelief.

"What's the matter my boy? I'll go first, and you all will just have to follow behind. Slowly. We don't have much time until the witch comes to get us."

Edmund nodded with a shrug. "Mr Beaver's right. Besides, the wolves might come chasing after us again."

Jess was set to say something but gave up on it when he realized that what he was going to say was going to be meaningless. Mr Beaver gently moved his tail against the ice, smacking it ever so lightly to make sure it was safe to step on. After he moved, Edmund followed, lifting his foot slowly and stepping on the ice as easy as he could before Jess followed and did the same thing, with Leslie being the last in the line.

Suddenly, howls erupted from behind which caused them to turn around in panic, fearing that it was what they dreaded.

The pack of wolves were chasing them. "Mr Beaver!" Edmund called urgently. It was either run, or continue at this pace and likely to be captured. "We have to run, now!" Jess yelled.

Mr Beaver got on all fours and started running and so did the three pre-teens. The ground was slippery so it was hard to run without falling or slipping. The wolves had claws so they had more advantage than the three did which only made it even worse when Jess thought about it. They were almost near to the end.

All of them stopped in their tracks, and luckily in time when Jess managed to see in the far off distance that the frozen ground was breaking and in a split second, it had almost reached them if not for Jess yelling for them to stop.

"Holy crap, what are we gonna do?" Leslie questioned the rest as her eyes widened in shock from watching the ice shattering in front of her.

Edmund didn't even feel it when Jess took his dagger from him.

"What are you doing?"

"I'll hold them off for a while. You guys should just get to safety," he looked at Leslie who was looking at him in disbelief. "It's the only way you're going to make it."

"Lad, if we go, you're just going to be torn to shreds!" Mr Beaver argued.

Jess ignored Mr Beaver's warning and stepped on the ice beneath them, checking if it was hard enough to carry them. He attempted to step forward but Leslie had grabbed his arm. "Jess, you can't do this." She told him, as if commanding him to stop whatever he was going to do, almost pleading.

A howl was heard yet again.

Jess gaze at Leslie's upset and fearful eyes. Even though in a situation like this, she could still look so angry and in some ways, it frightened him. He looked at Edmund who had been quiet for some time and shot him a look, to which Edmund understood. He looked at Leslie again and then patted her head with a small smile as if she was May Belle. Edmund then pulled Leslie back to him and Mr Beaver, giving Jess the chance to do what he was planning to.

Jess plunged the dagger deep into the ice, and in a split second, the cracks appeared and soon there was a long line of cracks at the sides. The ground started shaking, so much that the wolves behind had to stop to keep their balance. The ice along the cracks then shattered, separating Jess with Leslie, Edmund and Mr Beaver. With one last look, he gave a nod to Edmund before turning around to face the wolves. The three on the other side acknowledged him and the ice they stood on started to drift away.

Jess had drawn the dagger out from the ice and faced the wolves, gripping onto it tightly. It astonished him how such a small dagger as this had the power to shatter the ice all the way as he could see. He couldn't help but shake when the wolves came nearer and nearer.

He held his ground and raised the dagger up when the wolves giving, giving menacing and scary growls, revealing their fangs at him.

"Oh now? What a brave little fool you are!" A medium sized wolf stepped forward and snickered. Jess still couldn't get used to animals talking.

He pointed the dagger straight at the wolf as it came closer, his hands shaking. He furrowed his eye brows when the wolf spoke yet again. "Your foolish sacrifice will be worth nothing once we get to your friends."

"Shut up, dumb dog!" Oh great, Jess. You're going to get eaten and that's the best you could come up with.

The wolf snarled and had all its hair on its back standing up on its end. It seemed like the wolf was furious with what Jess had just said. Just as it was about to attack, it was stopped when another wolf commanded him to.

"Stop, you insolent mutt." The wolf growled and stepped forward.

The wolf appeared to be much much bigger than the rest of the pack, it's black fur and sharp teeth making it more terrifying. "This one's a human. He might prove useful to the Queen."

"Yes, Vigrum..." The medium sized wolf said as he retreated back into the pack.

"Now..." Vigrum, the wolf approached Jess and growled.
