Maya's pov

"I'm not gonna say what I did, I'm too ashamed to say. But I will say this, everything I did, I've stopped." Lucas's eyes showed that look of loss again. I shifted my legs to sit in a cross-cross applesauce way so I could listen better.
(Throw back to preschool).

He shakes his head with a smile on his face, then follows my actions and criss-crosses as well.

"Anyway, I was really popular for what I did, girls were all over me, some guys too," he winks at me to get me to chuckle. I do.
"I could've been a super nice popular kid, I was in all these clubs and I was the captain of the football team. I should've been a swell leader with all that power, but instead, I was a complete dick," Lucas looked away from me in shame.

"And then-" his breath hitched and he licked his lips. I could tell that this next part was going to be difficult to hear. I stuck my hand out and waved it to tell him that he didn't need to tell me anything. He simply shook his head again as if silently saying,
I do.

"My sister was the nicest person you would ever meet. She was friends with basically everyone in this school, she had friends in the band and friends on the cheerleading team. To her, anyone at this school was just a person who needed a friend. You couldn't find anyone who would hate her. She did get annoyed with that though, she tended to love drama. And on top of her incredible kindness, she was beautiful and smart, many guys fawned over her. She really didn't mind that much at all," Lucas laughs nudging my shoulder.

I giggle and subconsciously move closer to him. For some reason I felt kind of drawn to him, he had this warm smile and embrace that just made you want to be around him all the time.

"She was at the highest part in her life, and that's when everything went to hell. I was sleeping in my bed when I heard the most horrible sound I'd ever heard in my life, I got out of bed and found my sister on the ground in her bedroom crying. She never cried. When I asked her what was wrong she just simply ran up and hugged me. That's when I knew. The test came back positive," Lucas sighed.

I scrunched my eyebrows, clearly confused. What test? Was it a pregnancy test? A depression test? ADHD? Lucas took note of my confused face, his eyes widened as he realized his mistake.

"Oh sorry, the test was for breast cancer. See she's noticed some difference in her, you know, body. So my mom took her in to see the doctor,".

Oh crap. Crap crap crap crap crap crap. Ughhh. I should've known. I must look super stupid right now. Poor Lucas, no wonder he flipped his switch, his sister must've been super close to him and... and...

"I suppose you can guess what happened next," Lucas inquired. I nodded my head solemnly. Lucas sighed then stood up and dusted his pants off before continuing,
"So I cleaned up my act, stopped hanging out with all the wrong people and made some good relationships with my sister's best friends,".

Melanie and Riley. I repeat in my mind. I guess that's why they're such great friends. Now everything makes sense. When I look back over at Lucas, his eyes had glazed over a bit and his gaze had shifted to the floor. I reluctantly stood up and reached my hand up to his shoulder, attempting to comfort him in some way....
You know this is probably way too uncomfortable for him maybe I should just..

Before I can continue my silent thought I'm engulfed in yet another Lucas hug, this time I don't resist and I just hug him back. Even though Lucas and I had just met, I could tell he would be one of the closest friends I'd ever had.

"Alright, I guess we should get you outta here, yah?" Lucas asked devilishly. I giggled then nodded, he grabbed my hand and opened the closet door just to take off sprinting down the halls and into the school parking lot. We stop for a brief moment to catch our breath, we're both tired but smiling profoundly. He holds out his arm like a proper gentlemen and says (in his obnoxiously fake British accent),
"Where shall we go miss Maya?"

I laugh stupidly and he just smiles at me. I pull out my phone and search restaurants in Brooklyn. As I'm about to find a quiet bookshop/cafe, Lucas steals my phone laughing. I protest silently by reaching to get my phone back when he puts it in his bag.

"Maya I am not letting you be a wallflower in a quiet bookshop anymore, you're going to explore this city. Right. Now!"
