Ethan and Bridget ran into Beckett's room. He had tears coming out in streams. He was clutching his stomach. Bridget gasped at the sight. Ethan ran over and picked the small boy up.
"Get in my car. I'll take him to the hospital." Ethan said. Bridget obeyed and followed Ethan out the door. Bridget closed the door behind her and locked it. She fumbled into Ethan's car and sat in the back. Ethan laid Beckett's head on her lap and buckled him in. Ethan got the drivers seat and sped off to the hospital.
"How long has he been saying his stomach hurt?" Ethan asked. Bridget opened her mouth to answer but only a sob came out.
"Um- since uhh. Gosh since Kerri was the babysitter." She said stuttering.
"So about three months." Ethan said to no one in particular. The rest of the ride was silent. Once they arrived at the hospital Ethan parked. He parked terrible. If someone wanted to park next him they couldn't, he was crooked and the back of his vehicle was in one space while front was in a different one. Ethan jumped out and grabbed Beckett again. Beckett's was pale but he was awake. Bridget ran behind Ethan into the building. Once inside Ethan ran to the front desk.
"I need a doctor now. Something is wrong with him- his stomach." Ethan basically screamed at the lady.
"Sir if you would calm down-" she began
"Maybe if you get me a doctor I'll calm down." He said. Bridget put her hand on his shoulder.
"Ethan stop-" he turned and looked to her eyes which were filled with tears.
"Sorry" he said. He said it did low Bridget could barely hear him.
One hour later-
Bridget had her head on Ethan's shoulder. He was playing with her fingers and spinning her mothers ring around in circles on ring finger. It one small pearl in the middle and a silver band. It was a white pearl. But it had a small shade of pale pink to it.
"Where did you get this?" Ethan asked.
"It was my moms. It was a ring she got from her mom when I was born. She gave it to me before she died." She sighed.
"It's beautiful" he said in a raspy voice. Bridget lifted her head and looked into Ethan's eyes. He had brown eyes and long eyelashes. She put her hand on his cheek and opened her mouth to speak, only she couldn't. The doctor had said her name. She spun around to see a man in a simple doctors outfit.
"Miss Benson? Bridget, Benson?" He said slowly. She stood up and pulled Ethan up with her. He laced his fingers into hers and gave her hand a small squeeze.
"My name is Doctor Adrian. I ran a few test on Beckett and he seems to be totally fine." Bridget's face dropped.
"Fine? FINE?" She shouted.
"He is not fine! He has been hurting for months and tonight he was in more pain than he has ever been in before! He is not fine. I know my baby brother and I can assure you he is not fine!" She shouted and stepped closer to the doctor, gritting her teeth.
"Ma'am. The test showed nothing wrong with him. He had a small amount of gas in his intestines. Normally when that happens he just needs to release the gas. I gave him some medicine that- in a much simpler explanation- will pop the gas bubble." He finished. Bridget looked at him. He was wrong. She knew he had to be wrong.
"Can we see him?" Ethan asked.
"Of course. In fact he can go home right now." Bridget shook her head and followed the doctor. Beckett was sitting on a stool in an exam room. A nurse had given him a sucker and was looking at a roll of stickers. He chose a green dinosaur sticker and put it on his hand.
Later that night-
Bridget tucked Beckett into bed and walked out of his room and shut the door. She walked into the living room and saw Ethan holding a picture. The picture was her mom in a hospital bed. She had just given birth to Beckett and Bridget was leaning over her shoulder. Beckett was holding Bridget's finger and Bridget and her mom smiled down at Beckett. Ethan smiled at the photo and set it back on its original place on the fireplace mantel. He turned around and saw Bridget. He engulfed her in hug and she had her face directly in his chest. He rubbed his hands up and down her back. He placed his hands on both sides of her face. He pulled her back and placed a kiss on her forehead.
"He's not fine Ethan. I know he's not." She said in a scared and raspy voice. He moved her head and tilted her chin up so he could see her eyes.
"I believe you. But you heard the doctor. If something happens again, we can take him to a different doctor." Bridget nodded her head and rested her head on Ethan's chest. He hugged her tightly. She looked at the digital clock behind Ethan. 4:47 holy cow.
"Ethan you should go. It's late and I know your tired." She said. He tucked a strand of hair that fell from her ponytail behind her ear.
"Will you be okay by yourself?" He asked.
"I don't know." She said sighing.
"I can stay if you want." He said. His eyes were seemed to be saying something to her. His pupils got a bit larger than were a second ago. Bridget's heart picked up speed. She trusted Ethan. But what if something came over him and he wanted to take advantage of her. He wouldn't do that. She thought. But he could. It would be so easy. Being in a small apartment with a girl. She shuddered and pulled herself out of his arms. She did it quickly- too quickly. Ethan looked puzzled.
"Um no. You should go" she said flatly.
"Bridge? You okay?" He said. She stared at him and took a step back.
"I don't want to stay and- you know. I want to stay and comfort you and also so I can be here if something happens." He looked hurt. He looked down and started walking towards the door.
"Ethan I-" he turned around with what looked like could be tears.
"I would never- ever do anything to you. I don't want you to think that I would either." His eyes flickered across the room. Why did I think that. I'm scared of men. I have a right to be sacred ever since the night that mom died and that man that- she stopped thinking of the memory and ran up to Ethan. She stood in her tip toes. She still wasn't tall enough to reach his face so grabbed it with her hands and pulled his face down to hers. She pressed her lips lightly to his. He didn't kiss her back. She pulled away quickly, she was embarrassed and flushed. He was stunned. But something flashed in his eyes. It was warm and he didn't look hurt anymore. He kissed her back. He had both hands in her face and she had her hands pressed on his chest. Her lips and face tingled at his touch. He dipped her in a backwards motion. She smiled and pulled away from him.
"I know. I'm sorry. But I trust you Ethan. I do." He pushed her hair behind her ear and smiled.
"I'll see you tomorrow night for the ball." He said. With that he left. She watched his car drive away. She took a shower and crawled into bed. 5:30 the clock read. She laid on her side. And smiled as she thought about Ethan. But then her smiled turned into a frown. She remembered Beckett and how she had a feeling something was wrong. She tried to push the feeling aside but it just let memories of her mother come to mind.
"Bridge I may be leaving you, but I love you. Take care of my baby boy for me." Bridget looked at her mom and had tears falling from her eyes. "Mom don't say that. You can beat this cancer. Your a fighter. You can win." She said. Her mother took off her ring and put in Bridget's finger. "I don't have a lot of fight left in me."
