Philip Lester is an orphan. He doesn't tell people this fact to get pity, but he doesn't keep it a secret either. This fact is the reason why Phil is the person he is in the present. Ever since both parents passed away when he was young, he had to learn how to be resourceful real quick before he turns into one of the criminals running around, stealing everything. He worked as a babysitter, a baker's assistant, a mailman, and so much more. There's a lot one can do in the kingdom of Genaira.
Currently, he was walking towards the small bookshop by the corner near the small house he lived in. The owner, Chris, had sent him a letter saying he had a job for him to do. But Phil was already sure it had nothing to do with the books.
"Oh, Phil! You're finally here!" Chris rushed to stand in front of him, a parchment clutched in hand. "Did the boy not deliver the letter in time? You are looking great, as always. Did you do something with your hair? It looks wond--"
"What do you want, Chris?" Phil cut him off. He sent an amused smile to his friend, partnered with a raised eyebrow. Phil has known Chris for years and constantly worked for him to run small errands. He knew him well enough to know that he's a hard worker, very kind, and that if he showers you with compliments, it's because he needs something you can offer.
Chris ended his ramblings and became flustered. "I need you to read this through for me and see if it's alright." He handed Phil the paper and looked at him with hopeful eyes. After reading one line, Phil quickly realised what it was and placed it back on Chris' hands.
"No, I'm not suppo-"
"Please, Phil. Just this once. It's really important." Chris begged. He held the letter out for Phil to take once more.
Phil sighed. "Chris, this letter is for him. If you really have faith that whatever's going on between you two can turn into something serious, then you have to write from your heart, not mine." He shook his head and took a step back. Chris took a step forward in response.
"But you really need to read this one!" He insisted. "This is an important one, and I just need to have someone else's opinion if I'm writing the right words for it."
Again, Phil sighed. "Fine, I'm going to read through it and tell you whatever I think, but that's it. I won't rewrite it for you." He reluctantly took the paper and silently read it as Chris walked back to the counter. The letter was written to the guy Chris has been exchanging letter with for months. Phil never got the name from Chris because he didn't want to reveal it, but according to him, they became close to each other and have admitted the possibility of developing feelings for each other.
Phil, on the other hand, never had a relationship or even developed a crush on anyone, despite the romantic he is. He loves reading books about two people falling in love, or even poetry expressing the deepest sorrows of heartbreak, but he never got to experience it.
"You're going to meet him?" Phil asked as he finished the letter. He sat leaned on the counter and slid the letter towards Chris. "You're finally going to meet this guy you've been talking about non-stop, but would never tell me the name?"
"Yes, I mean, w-well... It depends. Ife he shows up, I mean, I'm going to ask him through the letter, but was it o-okay?" Phil nodded, putting a stop to Chris' stutter. He continued to tell him parts of the letter he particularly liked as Chris started to smile with confidence a but more.
"Yeah, you're right. The letter is great. Well done, Chris." He would say to himself before he started rummaging through the drawers. "Alright, here's a small payment."
"What- Chris, I don't need payment for reading over your letter." Phil protested.
Chris sent him a grin. "Yeah, but I need you to place it under the rock near the tree by the river. You know, the place I showed you where we exchange our letters?" Phil rolled his eyes as he took the letter and the payment. "I'll deliver it safely, Chris. See you around."
