Izzy's POV:
Day 1I woke up to Ralph yelling out to us.
"Breakfast!" I bolt up, forgetting that I was on a camping trip with the youth. I quickly grab my phone to check the time: 6:58 AM. I groan and kick my blankets off of my body, pulling on a new pair of jeans and a hoodie. Opening the flap I step out and into the cold morning air.I walk over to the tables and sit next to my sister, who is looking rather pale.
"Are you okay, Shay-Shay?" I ask, running my hand through her tangled mane. She shakes her head, looking down at her trembling hands. I frown, feeling sorry for my sister. Della walks over and sits by me, still wearing her school tee-shirt and sweatpants.
We all sit in silence, waiting for either Eddie or Ralph to start prayer.
"Okay. Bow your heads." We did as told, bowing our tired heads and closing our eyes.
"Lord," Eddie starts. "Thank you for all-" My minds starts to wander and my thoughts go to Paul.
I hope Paul is okay...
I hope that he has something to eat.
I hope he's not cold..
My mind once again travels to Della's and my conversation earlier this morning.
I hope he's not dead...
"Thank you.. Amen." I lift my head up to see that the prayer is over and we're allowed to eat.I walk over to the table, allowing myself to be one of the last people. "Izzy..." Della whispers behind me, poking my shoulder.
"Do you think Paul's okay?" I look at her in the eyes, seeing the worry in them.
"We can only hope so.." Della nods and stands there, seemingly broken. I grab a biscuit and walk over to the picnic tables. Della jogs up to my side and we choose a place to sit together.~~~
As the day progresses, we all become more anxious to find Paul.
"He should be back by now! It's one o'clock!" Eugena announces, becoming more and more nervous.
"He'll be back." Ralph tries, and fails to assure her.
"How can you be so sure?! It's been hours since he left! All because of some stupid medicine!" Eugena fires back.
I look at her from the corner of my eye, trying to keep my cool.
"Vomit isn't that big of a deal anyways." She growls, crossing her arms over her chest. I stay silent, growing angry at her. Della places her hand on my shoulder, sensing my anger. Next thing I know, Della is trying to stand up for Shaylee.
"Eugena, calm down. Paul's fine. He'll be back. But right now, we have bigger tasks at hand." Eugena looks up at Della then a little farther away at where Maggie and Shaylee sat.
"Bigger tasks?" Eugena spits, "My little brother is out there by himself! Excuse me but I don't think anything is bigger than that right now!" Della scoffs at her.
"Think of everyone else! Not just yourself!" She yells.
"Della, that's quite enough." Eddie, her dad, warns her. Della shakes her head at them both.
"We have bigger things at-" She's cut off by a scream and the screeches of many birds. We all directed our attention to the wooded area that the black and blue birds were coming from."What was that?" Nolan asked, obviously confused.
"Not sure..." Michal, his older brother, told him. I looked at the two brothers than back at the area where the birds had flown from. My mind wandered and I wondered. Exactly, who was it?~~~
