We arrived in Charlotte to perfect weather and the reappearance of Sophia. I stayed as far away from Liam as I could, but every time I turned around, she was standing there. She was outside the makeup room. She was in the hall outside my hotel room. She watched me from the side of the stage. It was creepy. After our first show, we ran off stage, trying to not look at Sophia. We showered and changed. All four of us and the babysitter were going out. Dinner, dancing, just fun. I needed it. We all needed it. Tomorrow was our single release day and Benny was already planning a party for after tomorrow's show. We all had a feeling that this might be our last chance to go out and have fun without being recognized.
"Did you see that there were signs for US? Like at the show? I saw two that said Lynx forever and one that called you a whore, Styx." Max said.
"I saw one that said: I'll take the bassist." Vi giggled.
"I hope we get interviewed on Entertainment tonight. My Grandma doesn't believe anyone is famous until they are interviewed by Mary Hart." Jesse laughed. I was at the back of the group lagging behind, wanting to be happy, but not fully succeeding. I heard a strange squealing noise followed by Max screaming for me to move. I turned toward the noise and saw lights. I felt pain and I hit ground.
"Beth? Can you hear me?" Someone was flashing a light in my eyes. I couldn't move. I couldn't talk. I tried, but something wasn't right. I hurt everywhere.
"...Broken leg. Broken wrist. Concussion and cuts and bruises. She's lucky that all." Someone was talking. I didn't recognize the voice. I forced my eyes open. Looking around, I saw Benny and Max. I tried to turn my head, but it hurt.
"Beth?" I knew that voice. It was my mother. I wanted to see her and I tried again to turn my head. It was her. I tried to talk, but only a strange noise came out of my mouth. "Don't try to talk, honey. It's okay. Your face is a mess. It will only hurt you." I blinked and tried to looked around, but everything was blurry. One of my legs was raised up and I couldn't put it down. I was so frustrated, I started to cry. I didn't understand what was going on. "Honey, stop moving around. You were hit by a car. You have a broken wrist, leg, and cuts and bruises on your face. Just stay calm, okay? Are you hurting?" I just cried again. "Okay, I am putting a trigger in your hand, press your thumb down and you will get pain meds." I pushed the button until everything went black again.
The next time I opened my eyes, there was a nurse standing over me. "Hey, there. How are you feeling?"
I decided to try my voice. "Bad."
She patted my shoulder. "You should sweetie. You are lucky you feel anything. I bet you are thirsty?" I nodded. She held up a cup and a straw for me to sip out of. I leaned forward and took a drink, before falling back.
"What happened to me?" I asked.
"I'll tell her." Liam. It was Liam talking. I turned my head to see him. He was walking to me, hand out. "Hey, Lizzy." He took my hand.
"What happened?" I asked, closing my eyes again. Being awake hurt. I pressed the button again. I heard Liam say Sophia before I went back to sleep.
I woke up hungry, I don't how much later. I was alone. I looked around for a way to call someone. I still had the pain pump in my good hand. I didn't know what to do, so I laid there, hoping someone would come in. After a while, I decided to just hit the pain button again. It was easier to be asleep.
A nurse woke me up next. She was bringing in food. "What day is it?" I asked.
"October 1st." she answered.
I tried to do math in my head. Everyone was in Atlanta. I had missed two shows and I was alone. Everyone must have left. "Can I have my phone? How can I eat? Can I sit up?"
The nurse helped me sit up, but told me that I didn't have a phone with me. I managed to eat and my leg was down and not hanging anymore. A doctor came in after the nurse to check me over. He told me I was healing. I'm not sure I believed him. I felt awful. I found the nurse button and asked for a shower. My right leg and wrist were in casts. I needed help getting out of bed. I needed help getting the plastic protectors over my casts. The nurse put a chair in the shower and turned on the water for me before stepping out. I managed to wash my hair and body. I turned off the water and wrapped myself in a towel. The nurse came and helped me back into bed. I felt better, but I was still alone and I didn't know how to get a hold of anyone. As I was thinking all of this, the phone next to my bed rang. "Hello?" I said, picking it up.
"Beth? Are you awake?" It was my mom. "Okay, honey, we are on our way. Hang in there."
We talked briefly before she hung up. They arrived pretty quickly, happy to see me. They explained what had happened. Sophia tried to kill me by hitting me with a car. She was in jail. It was still unclear what would happen to her. She was going to jail, it was just not decided where or when. Or even for how long.
The tour had to go on without me, but the couldn't perform 'I don't believe you' without me. Benny had found a drummer to fill in for me. They didn't want to leave, but Benny made them. "Where is Liam?" I asked.
My mom shrugged. "With the tour, I guess, honey." she said. "He was here, but he had to go. We are taking you home tomorrow. We left to get the car. Didn't want to try to fly you home. You are coming to Michigan while the girls finish the tour. The video is out. It's doing great, honey. I'm really sorry this happened."
I shook my head. "It's my own fault. I shouldn't have crossed her. Liam warned me that she would hurt me."
"What?" my mom said. "He knew she'd hurt you, but he kept coming back to you? Putting you in danger? You didn't do anything wrong. Max told us that he came to you. He did this to you. You are not allowed around that boy again, Beth. Do you hear me?"
I was too tired to fight with her and she was probably right anyhow. He wouldn't stand up to her for me. He let me get hurt. The constant battle in my head raged on, not knowing who to listen to, but part of me knew that if he'd told someone, made her go away, I would still have two functioning legs and I could have finished the tour. How could he claim to love me when this was really his fault?
