SANG
"Ever been to the aquarium?" Silas asked, one hand on the wheel as he pulled out of the roomy parking space.I shook my head.
"My school had a field trip to one back in Illinois. Marie and I didn't go through because our mother wanted us to stay home."Silas frowned and clenched his fists on the wheel.
"I don't know how she's gotten away with that all these years. If she was.." He trailed off, suddenly to riled to continue.I looked at him strangely. It wasn't like Silas show his anger like that.
"Think of it this way," I placed a hand on his leg and felt him relax slightly, "Now I get to experience it for the first time with you. I think that's better than any school field trip."
He leaned over and kissed my cheek.
"You make it sound like so positive." Silas said, now beginning to navigate his way out of the complex.
I shrugged "Not everything was punishments and paranoia. There were good times too."
Silas didn't say anything in reply, maybe he didn't have too, but I felt like, too often, the boys thought that there were no happy times mixed among the bad. If I were to be honest with myself the good times were few and far between, but they were there regardless.
"Marie and I used to play pretend together and dad would bring home his old office stuff for us to play with. " I blurted out, mostly to begin the conversation again.
"Clocks right?" He asked, squeezing my hand.
"Clocks and letter openers." I corrected, "I was killer with a letter opener. I used them to dig up worms and cut flowers for crowns. "
The days seemed so far away now, so innocent and naive now that I knew the truth about my family.
Silas's phone let out a ring, interrupting me from my thoughts and making me grown.
I crossed my fingers at the same time Silas let out a moan.
"Please for the love of all that is good don't let this be Academy." He muttered quickly before flipping his phone over and looking at the name flashing on the screen."It's my dad." Silas said, giving me a quick sideways look and passing the phone to me. "Talk to him?"
He requested, already turning around.I fumbled with the phone nervously in my hand. "What do I say?"
"Hello usually works for me." He replied, reaching over and pressing the button to accept the call.
I raised it to my ear with my mouth already open to say hello when a stream of Greek came through too fast for me to try to understand. My mouth fell open and I floundered, trying to think of what to do next.
"Er... Hello?" I asked, the person on the other end breathed heavily and paused.
"Silas?" Charlie's heavily accented voice came through the phone, sounding strangely uncertain.
"This is Sang, Sir. I'm Silas's-" he cut me off, his voice now slightly abashed at his quick greeting.
"You're his girlfriend. How are you doing love? My son treating you right?"
"Yes Sir." Silas mimed a fish and moved his hands like a wave. I tried not to laugh, but a giggle leaked out anyway.
"We are going to the aquarium together today."
Silas tapped his wrist like he was wearing a watch, then his raised his hand in a fake cell phone.
I gave him a look. If he wanted me to play charades with him then he needed to be more specific.
