Despite aliens roaming the earth, the 2nd Mass' time at the abandoned hospital had been rather peaceful. So peaceful infact that, it seemed the building had become their new home.
River and Ben now had a permanent room to call their own. A place that the former would have happily called her 'safe place'. Being with Ben made her feel safe. At night when she lay in his arms, she could almost pretend- even just for a moment- that the world was normal.
It was like any other night, after a long and exhausting day, River and Ben had fallen asleep in their bed but despite her deep slumber holding her captive in it's comforting embrace, River couldn't help but feel a wave of dread wash over her. Through the murky depths of sleep she emerged, a film of cold sweat greeting her now conscious state. What was it that had awoken her? What had made the female feel so uneasy?
Had the world been free of Skitters, River might have just ignored her fear and gone back to sleep but when it came to the 2nd Mass, peace never did last long, so there was no way she was taking her chances.
"Ben." she whispered, eyes trained on the room's door. "Ben." River hissed louder, hoping he would awake quickly.
"Mmm?" his sleepy reply greeted her. The young male stirred, struggling to keep his eyes open. "River?" he sighed, stretching out his stiff arms.
"Something's wrong." she dared to speak a little louder. Her uneasiness rising with every second.
Her words woke him up better than any cup of coffee could. Now alert, he sat up frantically. "What?"
"I can feel it, something isn't right." then it dawned on River what was amiss. "It's too quiet." she murmured in horror.
"What?" he repeated, even more confused than before.
"Listen, just listen!"
The duo fell silent and the room was quickly engulfed in pin drop silence.
"There are no footsteps." Ben literally felt his heart skip a beat. "The soldiers...they...they should be on their rounds."
That was when they heard the scream.
