5.The Chain of Bets

Kids POV
I feel like everyone knows by now exactly whats going on between Maka and Soul: that they're both only dating each other off of a bet that the other can't find out about, which made it hard on me, since I was the one both of them consatnly came to for talking about feelings. It was hard not to just tell them how the other felt sometimes.

2 days ago, I made my bet with Liz, about whether or not the two of them would break up before the bet has been over for two weeks. The way things seemed now, it was leaning towards my side of the bet.

But Liz knows more about romantic stuff than I do (which leaves me wandering why both Soul and Maka come to me for advice in their relationship. It's like I was somehow a couple's councilor or something for them), so who knows, maybe she is right, but from what I had heard from the two of them, I felt like unless some miracle happened between them, the likelyhood of me being wrong was slim.

Apparently, yesterday, Black Star and Tsubaki got into a fight, about the exact same thing I got into a fight with Liz about. Black Star was too persistent to give up on the idea of Maka and Soul being together, and Tsubaki was mad at him for working with Liz on a bet. So you know what they did? They made the same bet we did. If Black Star won, Tsubaki would have to pay the money that he would be giving to Soul. If he lost, he would either pay Tsubaki the money he was supposed to give Soul( if Soul lost the bet) or he would have the same problem as Liz, he'd be Tsubaki's slave for a month.

And yet, we had about three months of holding our breath for all of the bets to be over. Our group of friends was basically divided into two little factions. On one side was Black Star, Liz, and Patty. On the other was Tsubaki, Crona and I. Maka and Soul weren't a part of the little factions we had, mainly because they didn't know about all of the bets, like the rest of us.

Soul's POV

I don't know why, but the past couple of days everyone's been acting weird. Yesterday, apparently Black Star and Tsubaki got into a fight, but nobody will tell either Maka and I what it was about, and now Black Star was occasionally giving mean glances to her. Any time we asked anyone about it, though, they changed the topic, like Maka and I simply weren't allowed to know about what happened in their fight. Liz and Kid kept giving each other weird glances, like you would give a glance to someone your close to that your about to compete against, yet they both claimed that they didn't know what I was talking about, though Kid seemed way more hesitant about telling us that than Liz was. It was almost like there was some kind of secret everyone was trying to keep from either me or Maka, or both of us.

Part of me started thinking Black Star's bet with me caused the fight between them. I knew for a fact that if Tsubaki found out about it, she would not approve of it. It seemed weird, though, that they wouldn't have had a fight about that until a month into our bet, but it would make sense, because they seemed to be hiding something from Maka and I, and that bet was definitely something that they were hiding from Maka.

My question though, is if they were trying to hide something from me too.

Maka's POV

"Soul, can you stop interrogating our friends?" Maka asked me. "It's obvious they aren't going to tell us anything about what you ask them."

I was getting annoyed with Soul. He kept insisting that something was off with everyone, which I admit, I saw exactly what he meant, but I didn't go and try sticking my nose where it didn't belong.

To be honest, the only reason I wanted him to stop is because I didn't want him to find out about the bet Liz and I had, which was a possibility for what Black Star and Tsubaki might have fought about. I don't know why they would fight about it, but it also seemed to be coming between Kid and Liz, too, so it wasn't completely impossible.

"How is it not bugging you that they're acting different? It's weird that for once, nobody is telling us anything. I mean, normally if Black Star and Tsubaki get into fights, we at least know what it's about, but everybody refuses to tell us what is going on! And what the heck is going on with Kid and Liz? They started acting like they hated each other out of the blue yesterday, which is when Black Star and Tsubaki got into the fight. I know that all that has to be connected somehow, and I want to know!" Soul exclaimed.

"I didn't say it wasn't bugging me. But unlike you I decide to not stick my nose where it doesn't belong." I told him.

"But what if it has to do with-" Soul nearly burst out, but stopped himself before he could complete his sentence.

"To with what, Soul?" I asked him. It seemed just as suspicious to me that he would start a thought that seemed like he had an idea that might know what was going on and he didn't want to share it with me.

"....Nevermind...." Soul said, slightly blushing, looking away a bit nervously.

That's odd....  I thought. Soul usually doesn't show it when he's nervous.

"Okay now you seem as suspicious as everyone else." I told him.

"I may finish that thought one day, but not right now." Soul said, refusing to look me in the eye.

Is it possible that maybe.... just maybe.... Soul is dating me for the same reason that I'm dating him? That this was all just set up?

Somehow that thought put my heart more at ease...... But I also knew I had to keep that thought to myself.

Kid's POV

"Guys seriously stop acting so weird about our bets. Soul and Maka are getting suspicious and Soul won't stop asking questions and I swear I'm on the verge of just breaking and telling him the truth!" I told Black Star and Liz. "I honestly think the two of them shouldn't be together in the first place, since they do not like each other, at all."

"Yeah right. I'll believe that they don't like each other the day I see a leprechaun riding a unicorn in the sky next to a flying pig." Liz said.

"That's..... extremely specific...." Tsubaki said.

"Yeah why can't you just say when pigs fly like a normal person?" Black Star said. "I mean, I obviously agree with you here, but really? Why the leprechaun riding a unicorn in the sky?"

"Technically that's a pegasus, by the way." I pointed out.

"Oh shut up nobody cares." Liz grumbled.

"Obviously I do. But really, back to the point, stop acting so differently!" I told them. "If you don't I'm going to tell both of them whats going on!"

"Soooo your black mailing us?" Patty said.

"Pretty much. If you guys don't stop acting weird I'm sure one of them will figure it out anyways!" Tsubaki said.

"Okay whatever I'll try to act 'normal'" Black Star said

"Okay, now that all that is taken care of," I started, "there's something you guys need to know."
