The next morning at about 4:00 AM the doctor came in, waking both Johnny and I up. "Well, your travel to Texas will be sooner than we thought, Johnny. The only opening we had was today at 9:00 PM, which is a very unusual time for a surgery. So, we're gonna go on and prepare you for your trip. May I ask how many will be traveling to Houston with us?" The doctor asked, scratching his head. Johnny looked at me as if asking, 'Will you go with me?' I nodded and smiled as Johnny told the doctor; "Two."
Later on that day at 6:00 PM they loaded Johnny and I up on a helicopter, for a two hour flight to Houston, Texas. "I'm glad you're coming with me." Johnny said, holding my hand as the helicopter took off. "I'm glad you invited me." I answered smiling the way someone would smile at their best friend. "Besides it looks like we're two of the same heart, unwanted by our parents with no where else to go..." He said, before going off into thought. "What's wrong?" I asked, alarmed at his silence. "I just remembered... My best friend... He thinks I'm dead. Him and his brothers were always there for me. You remember reading about Ponyboy, right?" He asked, looking at me from his stretcher on the helicopter. It was one of those special hospitable helicopters. I nodded, remembering the section on him and his brothers. "Well, his brother, Darrel, always kept the door unlocked for whoever needs a place to stay. So, needless to say me, being a part of their gang stayed there alot. I can't wait to show them I'm ok." He said, smiling before frowning again. "I just hope they won't be afraid of me and nothing bad happens because I 'died.'" He mumbled, his voice full of sorrow. I squeezed his hand, letting him know everything would be ok.
We continued to make small talk, getting to know everything that we could about each other. By the time the helicopter landed, we both knew each other the way we would've known each other after years and years of knowing each other.... But better. "Ok, Johnny, it's an hour before your surgery so we're gonna go ahead and start giving you the sedatives and medicines so we can go in and fix up that spine of yours. By the time we're done; you'll be good as knew." A new nurse told us, taking Johnny off the helicopter. "Oh and Mrs-" She started, about to call me his wife. "Miss." I told her, cutting her off. "Ok, Ms.... What's your name?" She asked, now very confused. "I'm Grace Lea Lynn. Just call me Grace, I'm just a friend who tagged along." I informed her, making her impressed for some reason. "Ok, Grace, when we get inside would you mind heading down the hall, into the waiting room during Johnny's 5 hour surgery?" The nurse asked, pushing Johnny through the double doors to the building. Right as I went to say 'yes mam' she pushed Johnny into the preparation room, where they're gonna start him on all the sedatives. I slowly walked to the waiting room and suddenly got nervous. Is he gonna be ok? Will something go wrong? What if he dies? I just kept thinking the worst until I started hyperventilating. I stepped outside to get some fresh air... But then I thought I might miss the doctor telling me something that might be a emergency. I ran back inside the waiting room and looked around, expecting the doctor to be standing there with a worried look.
A long time later the woman behind the desk looked at a paper that a nurse gave her. "Grace Lynn?" She asked, sweetly even though I could see a slight worried look in her eyes. "Yes?" I asked, running up to the desk; looking like a crazy person. "Johnny's surgery is going great... But we need some blood to give him. We have some but it's very little and he might have some blood flow issues in the future with that little blood. We were wondering if you'd be generous enough to donate some?" She asked, jumping when I shouted, "Yes!" Really quickly. "That'd be great. Do you have O negative blood?" She asked, worried again. "It's very rare to come across. We'll need three pints." She said, looking at the papers again. "As a matter of fact I do have O negative blood. That's fine, I would give my life for his." I told her, as she lead me to the blood drawing room. "Ok, you're gonna need something to eat so you don't faint or anything, so I'll go get you some chips and a coke. Anything you prefer?" She asked, as another nurse got the blood drawing utensils together. "Pepsi. Other than that I don't care what type of chips." I said, in my voice that's not much above a whisper. Well, except for when I talk to Johnny. He just brings a different side of me out.
The woman stuck the needle in me and I almost fainted right off the bat. There isn't a needle inside me. There isn't a needle inside me. I told myself, remembering my fear of needles. I'll do it for Johnny. I thought, with courage. I'll do it for Johnny!
When they got done I was pail white and shaking. "You ok?" The blood sucking nurse who somewhere along the low I nicknamed 'the vampire' asked. "Y-y-yea. I'm just a little afraid of needles." I answered, my eyes wide. "Then Johnny must be someone special to you. This is a brave thing you're doing here." She told me, eyeing me up and down before handing me the chips and Pepsi. "Thanks." I mumbled, grabbing the food then heading to the waiting room again for the 'two hour wait.' Well that's what the nurse told me. I slowly ate and drank until around 2:00 AM when the doctor in a blue doctoring suit and mask thingy came and called my name.
