I woke up on the couch with a blanket over me, to the smell of eggs cooking. I sat up and stretched, while rubbing my eyes. I threw the blankets off of me and walked into the kitchen.
Darry was cooking eggs. He looked up at me and smiled. “Good morning. Want eggs, or cake?” He asked nodding over at the table.
I looked where he nodded at, and there sat a chocolate cake. “Cake? In the morning?” I asked laughing.
He shrugged. “That’s how we are. Chocolate milk and cake in the morning. I suggest you get a piece before everyone comes in.” He said.
I nodded. I walked over and grabbed a plate, and sliced a piece of cake and let it fall on my plate. I grabbed a fork and sat down at the table, with my legs crossed. I took a bite of the cake and smiled to myself. These guys were actually not terrible.
Darry interrupted my thoughts. “So, Kat. I can call you that right?Well anyway, you’re welcome here anytime. You’re actually nice, for a greaser girl.” Darry said.
I grinned. “Yes, you can call me that. Thanks, I might need it.” I said quietly.
Darry raised his eyebrow. “Tough home?”
I nodded. “Yeah, my pop drinks and hits me and my mum.” I said. “Not that big o’ deal.” I said.
Darry shook his head. “Sounds like Johnny’s folks.”
I bit my lip and thought for a minute. “So, hey… is Dally hard to get to? I know he’s a bit of a delinquent, but, I don’t know. He seemed hard as a rock.” I said.
Darry laughed. “Dally is a tough one. He really only has a soft spot for Johnny and Sodapop. Well, everyone loves Sodapop.”
I sighed. “Yeah, that’s what I though…” I took another bite of my cake. Dally sure was tough. He does seem like a cool guy, you know?I’m not sure what it is about him.
Sodapop walked in rubbing his hair. “Yo, Kat. How’s it going?” Sodapop said opening the fridge.
“I’m a bit better I guess. Still a bit shook up, you follow?” I asked.
Sodapop nodded. “Yeah, I follow. I’d hate to be the Soc that gets knocked up by Dally, though.” He said giving a chuckle. “We have history with Bob, the guy who raped you. He beat up Johnny, while back.”
I nodded. “I heard something about that.” I glanced at the clock and saw it was 10. I wonder what time I should get home…
At that point the doors busted open. Steve, Two-bit, and Johnny all came in hollering up a storm. They came in the kitchen and passed cake around, milk, eggs, and whatnot. Ponyboy had also came in during this. Steve sat down in front of me. “Dallas won’t be here just yet.” He said giving me a wink.
I giggled and smiled. I really didn’t want more fights, but, there was no stopping Dallas Winston. I got up with my now empty plate, and stuck it in the sink. I looked at it awkwardly, not wanting to leave dirty dishes in their sink. I rinsed the plate off, and scrubbed it down. I put it in the rack to dry, and turned around and nearly screamed.
Sodapop was watching me while leaning up against the wall. He chuckled. “You don’t have to do that.”
“It’s the least I can do.” I said.
He shook his head. “You sure are something.” He said walking off.
I walked back to the living room and saw Ponyboy relaxing on the couch. “Oh, hey, we washed your clothes. They’re on the bathroom sink.” He said giving me a smile.
I nodded and found my way to the bathroom. I closed the door and undressed. I went to grab my tank top, when the door swung open.
I screamed and held my shirt up to my chest, turning a dark red. Johnny had accidentally opened the door. “I… I am so sorry.” He said slamming the door and turning away.
I threw my shirt on and quickly brushed my hair. My heart was pounding. I grabbed the clothes I borrowed and threw them in the hamper, and walked out the door. I got a glance at Johnny, who was talking to Ponyboy. “I swear I didn’t mean to!”
I giggled and walked back into the dining room, when I heard the door slam.
I poked my head out the doorway and saw Dally walking in. I stepped out and saw he had a busted lip. He sat down on the couch. “Damn, Bob can throw a punch.” He said moving his jaw around.
I walked to the kitchen and got a tissue, a paper towel inside a baggy filled with ice, and walked up to Dally. “Here, I don’t know if this will help.” I said quietly.
Dally took the tissue and wiped off the blood running down his chin. He took the home make ice pack and held it to his lip, without saying a word.
I stood there awkwardly. “Thanks..” I said silently.
Dally looked up at me. “Whatever, man. I needed a fight anyway.” He looked at Mickey Mouse on the TV.
I took a deep breath. I really didn’t know what to do. Do I leave?
I went to the dining room and sat down to think a little bit. I needed to process everything that had happened. I’m not really sure if Dally wants me here or not. Darry was right, he is a tough one.
Dally walked into the kitchen and grabbed the plate of what was left of the cake. He eyes me for a moment. “You got a boyfriend?”
I shook my head. “Never had one.”
He chuckled. “That’s surprising.” He said walking out. “Heard from Johnny boy you gotta nice rack.”
I laughed, blushing a little bit. I decided I should get on home, it was around noon. I grabbed my purse and went to turn the knob to the door, when I heard. “Where you goin’?”
I turned around and saw Dally standing up, with a mad expression on his face. “I, thought you wanted me to get on home.” I said stuttering.
Dally sighed. “I mean, I don’t babysit, but if you’re gonna go home I gotta walk with ya. Darry’s orders.” Dally said walking up to me. “Let’s go.”
I opened the door, and the gate and headed towards my house.
Dally walked beside me, and took out a weed. He pulled out his necklace, and lit a match with it, and lit his weed. He blew the smoke the opposite side of me. He had this walk, kinda like a strut. I smiled at this. He really was something special.
“So, I heard home is tough, huh?” He asked taking a drag.
I nodded. “Yeah.”
“Most of us have it tough.” He said squinting around. There was silence for a while.
We finally got to the gates of my house. I stood there and looked up at my house. “Well, here is my humble home.” I said sarcastically.
Dally nodded. “Kay, I’ll see you around.” He said turning around.
I stood there and watched him take a few steps. I guess this is the end of my experience with him. I sighed and opened the gate. I was about to step through, when I heard a exasperated sigh.
Dally turned around and rolled his eyes. “Buck is having a party tonight, a few of the boys and I are heading there. You dig?”
I smiled, but hid it. “Sure.”
Dally nodded, and looked up at me. “Come at 9, any later and I have no idea who you are.” He said turning around, lighting another weed.
I smiled and headed up my steps. Consider it a date.
