Baby Steps

Chapter 1 The Beginning

Kaylee's POV

I'm finally here. Nashville, Tennessee.

I stared out the window of the taxi, just watching all the buildings go by. I'm already falling in love with the city.

I looked down at my baby girl, peacefully sleeping. It was the first time Gracie had slept all day. I trying hard not to wake her.

Now I bet you are wondering, 'Where's the father?'.

Well we broke up before she was born. He was just a horrible person and I don't even know why I was ever with him. I was young and naive. Breaking up with him was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

"We're here." the drivers voice broke me out of my thoughts.

"Thanks." I said as I handed him the money.

I unbuckled myself and Gracie.. Then I stepped out, placed Gracie on my hip and got my suitcase out.

The taxi drove away, leaving me in front of my new home. I walked into the lobby of the apartment building.

There were couches littering the lobby and people were just sitting and talking over coffee. The whole building had a homey feel to it.

I walked over to the front desk. I needed to get my keys.

"How may I help you?" the lady at the front desk asked.

"Hi I'm new here and I needed the keys to my apartment."

"What's your name?" she asked.

"Kaylee Daughtry."

"Ah here you are. You are in Room 28, Floor 2. Here are your keys. Laundry is in the basement, there is coffee down here. If you need anything, just ask."

"Ok thanks." I said as I walked away.

I adjusted Gracie on my hip. Looks like I'm on the second floor. I walked to the elevator and stepped in. Just as I was about to press the button, a girl came on.

She looked about my age. She had dirty blonde hair and brown eyes.

"What floor?" I asked.

"Second floor please." she responded.

I pressed the button and the elevator went up.

"Looks like we live on the same floor. I'm Kaylee."

"Well hi! I'm Emily."

"Awe. Is she yours?" she cooed.

"Yeah. This is Gracie." I said.

"Awe. She's adorable."

"Thanks. Well maybe we could hang out sometime. It's nice to know someone since I'm new to town."

"Oh cool! Yeah we could totally do that. I would love to show you around. Here's my number."

She grabbed a pen and a random scrap of paper from her purse and wrote her number on it. Then she handed it to me.

"Thanks. I'll text you later."

The elevator dinged. We both walked out and went our separate ways. Turns out we live next door to each other.

I placed the key in the lock and turned the knob. I adjusted Gracie and walked in.

It was just the right size for me and Gracie. The living room was a great size and so was the kitchen.

I walked down the hall, towards the bedrooms. This apartment had two bedrooms.

The first one was going to be Gracie's room. It was a really nice size for her and it had a good size closet. She had a lot of clothes and a walk-in for her was great.

Next I walked to my room. It was a great size and it had a walk in closet and a connecting bathroom.

Both of our beds fit in our rooms. I had them sent down before we arrived so we had somewhere to sleep.

"Ba da da." a little voice said.

I looked down. Gracie woke up.

"Hey baby girl." I cooed.

She was still half asleep. She would probably go back to sleep in 3...2...1. Yup she's asleep.

I knew she would be tired. It was a long plane ride from Georgia to Tennessee.

I walked back to her room and laid her in the crib. I grabbed a pair of pajamas from my suitcase and changed her. Then I covered her with a blanket and gave her her stuffed elephant.

She always slept with it. Instantly she grabbed it.

That was adorable.

I zipped up my suitcase and walked back to my room.

I changed into a pair of pajamas consisting of a big t-shirt and a pair of fuzzy pants.

I crawled into bed and fell asleep.
