"We'll get your stuff tomorrow, except for a few things you want to take up." Emily grabbed the book that excited her the most, feeling bad about the trunk full of things he got her today. She honestly had no explanation for his actions, but she felt closer to him today.
They quietly went upstairs and Emily got out her sleep clothes.
"I'm going to get a shower now."
"Ok, just give me a sec and I will be there to help you." Emily turned to him.
"No, that's ok. I think I can handle things by myself now. Jason stopped pulling his clothes out of the suitcase on the bed and turned to face Emily as well.
"Emily, what's going on? You haven't left me help you at all today. What's going on?" Emily bit her lip, wondering how to approach this.
"I'm so thankful for all the help you've given me. Not only that, you've been an amazing friend, doctor, roommate, and so much more. You've helped me out of a very hard and dark time in my life, something I don't think even Tiffany could have done. But I'm well enough to take care of myself now, for the most part. We both know that I can't depend on you forever. I'm going to have to go out, get myself another job, and work to get myself a place of my own again."
Jason's heart stopped and his stomach dipped. He knew she was getting better. He worked with her every day to make sure that happened. But to him, the thought of not taking care of her, not watching over her, and not having her around was a punch to the gut now. His words with his receptionist came back to him, seeing some truth in them now. He walked forward and took Emily's hand, getting closer to her.
"Emily, you don't need to leave. You don't need to worry about taking care of yourself. I know you're independent, and that's great, but I love taking care of you. You are the reason I became a doctor, so I could make this kind of difference. I just never expected you to make such a difference in me." Emily's heart fluttered like a teenage girl, looking up into his caring blue eyes. Jason looked back at her, searching for unspoken permission. When he found it in her sparkling green eyes he slowly lowered his face to hers, giving her time to back away. She didn't.
Jason tenderly pressed his lips against hers, his heart beating rapidly already. Emily responded and they moved their lips together, pulling each other closer. Before long Jason's tongue asked for entrance and he deepened the kiss. Emily dropped her crutch and put both arms around Jason, breathing faster. He easily held up her weight, being gentle to make sure no pressure was being put on her still hurting leg. He moved back, taking Emily with him until the backs of his knees hit the bed. Taking one arm, Jason swiped the suitcase into the floor with a thump and sat down, letting Emily sit on his lap. His hand snaked under her shirt, rubbing the sensitive skin on her hip. His fingers ran over a scar, and Emily snapped away from the heated kiss. She put a hand on his chest and wondered what in the world got into her, he only did this out of pity.
"Stop, Jason." He immediately pulled his hand away, leaving her still sitting on his lap.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" Emily cringed at the nickname her ex had for her.
"Please don't call me that. And you don't have to do this. I know what my body looks like. I'm marked and scarred forever. I don't need pity sex for you taking care of me." Jason furrowed his brows.
"What the hell are you getting at Emily? Scars or not, you are beautiful. In fact, I think you're even more beautiful with them. They show the strength that you possess, and what you pulled through. Even on the operating table, I could see how gorgeous you were and still are. I like you, I'm sure I have for a while. I sleep next to you every night. I get frustrated seeing you naked and not being able to look at you properly. I can't imagine you not living with me now, I'm so use to your company. Don't pull away because of your scars, wear them with pride." Emily was once again left speechless and while her heart soared she still had so much doubt about herself and Jason, whatever they were or could become.
"Jason, I'm not going to deny that there's something here. There is. But we still don't know each other well. We've never been romantic the whole past year, and I don't think it's smart to do this. My ex made me guarded around men. I've hardly spoken to the opposite gender since I left him. I don't even know if I'm ready to be with anyone else. He tore apart my emotions." Jason furrowed his brows, annoyed and slightly angry.
"I understand. But Emily we have all been through heart break one time or another. You can't push away something you want just because you got hurt. You took time to heal and now it's time to get back up on your horse."
"You don't understand what it's like. You're obviously the one who left Carolyn. You didn't have to experience pain like I did." Jason swallowed a lump in his throat, along with the frustration he had with Emily.
"You know nothing about what happened. You don't know why I left her. You don't understand what I have to go through." Emily sighed and she finally pulled herself off his lap.
"You're right. I'm sorry. But that just backs up my point that we don't know each other as well as you think." Jason ran a hand over his face.
"I guess you're right about that. There may still be things we need to learn about each other, but I won't give up on this. And you aren't moving out just yet. I'm the doctor here and I think you need supervision for a while longer." He gave Emily a sideways smile and she rolled her eyes in return.
"Ok, ha-ha, Mr. Doctor. Now I'm going to bed, forget the shower." The mood lightened and they both went to bed, forgetting their conversation about relationships. At least for now.
