Demetri's POV
I got out of work late tonight, and with it being a Friday and me no longer having a girlfriend, I felt this increasing loneliness. After Shelby and I mutually ended things, everything thankfully began to go back to normal. Rayne and I still spoke (as friends) and even occasionally hung out- though not often. I knew Jace was working at the rink tonight but I had no idea what Rayne was up to. I texted him to see if he was around to do something, but received no reply. After about twenty minutes, I decided I would just swing by his house and see if he wanted to catch a movie or go see Jace at his job.
When I arrived at Rayne's house, there were lights on in Rayne's bedroom so I assumed he was there, but the rest of the house seemed dim. I tried texting him again. Knowing how his mom was, I didn't dare ring the doorbell. Instead, I went to the front door and peeked through the windows. The living room was empty, save for a coat strewn across the couch. I checked to see if the door was open, and it was. I had walked into his house when I knew he was home unannounced several times so this wasn't a big deal. I figured his mom would be asleep in a drunken stupor the way that she normally was on weekends, so I crept through quietly, going up the stairs to his room. His room door was shut all the way, so I quietly knocked on it. I heard footsteps rush to the door, and the door swung open quickly, revealing an unfamiliar familiar face with an expression of anticipation. When he noticed that I must not be who he was expecting, his expression changed to one of confusion.
"Who the hell are you?" he asked in a thick accent that sounded Australian. I didn't have a pen or paper and I doubted the guy understood sign language so I stared at him dumbfoundedly. For a moment I thought I had walked into the wrong home. But no, all of the furniture in the home was the same, and I could see Rayne's rug from where I stood.
"Hello? Who are you?" He asked again. I sighed in exasperation and pushed past him into Rayne's room. When the guy looked at me again, I pointed to my mouth and used my hands to demonstrate the "I can't talk" motion.
"You can't speak? Well can you leave? Because this night's been weird enough." he said, standing beside the door, expecting me to leave. I looked around Rayne's room and noticed the photographs on his wall. I walked over to them and looked at the person standing in the room. I pointed to the picture of Rayne and his ex-boyfriend Cody. The same Cody that broke Rayne's heart, leading him to kiss me that first night.
"Yeah, that's me. Look, I'm sorry to be rude but I don't know what you want. I thought you were Rayne." he said, finally stepping away from the door and walking over to sit on the bed. I walked over to Rayne's dresser and grabbed a notepad and pen.
I'm Demetri. His friend. Does he know you're here? I scrawled it and handed it to him.
He rolled his eyes and looked up at me.
"Yeah unfortunately that didn't work so well. His new "boyfriend" hit me and then Rayne ran off to god knows where." he muttered bitterly. I took the notepad back.
Well, you did just kind of abandon him. And Jace is his boyfriend. For about two months now. Why are you still here if he left? I waited as he read it.
"No. I'm his boyfriend. I fucked up but he and I have been best friends since we were children. We're partners. I'm not letting that go. I realized I screwed up and I came across the world to be with him. I am his. He's mine. I'm not leaving until he realizes it." he said stubbornly. As arrogant and entitled as he sounded, there was a softness to him. I could see the hurt in his eyes and in the set line of his mouth. He sighed deeply. I took the notepad with me and sat beside him on the bed.
Rayne took it hard. I know how you feel, believe it or not. But he is happy with Jace and Jace is one of my best friends. He's a good guy and he treats Rayne really well. Maybe you should just call it what it is and go home.
