Almost a week had passed with Clary feeling out of sorts. She scheduled an appointment with the Dr. and Jace stayed home with Mackenzie while Clary was out.
The next day, Jace woke up first like always and went to have left over pancakes. He met Mackenzie in the kitchen standing on a chair trying to reach the cabinet where they kept the cereal. He rushed over just as the chair began to tip forward as she went on her tiptoes "Woah!" He caught the chair and pushed it back down. The chair legs banging on the floor making mackenzie wobble as she tried to find her balance again.
She turned to her father, crossing her arms and pouting "you almost made me fall!"
He laughed, "you were doing a fine job of that on your own. Let me help you." She sat down and he pushed the chair back to the table before grabbing the cereal she wanted, a bowl, and milk putting it all on the table and combining the items to make her breakfast. He set the bowl in front of his daughter with a kiss to the top of her head.
Clary woke to the sound of her phone vibrating against the nightstand. She wasted no time in answering, keeping her eyes closed she rattled out a sleep ridden "Hello?" and cleared her throat. It was the doctor's office calling with the results of her blood test. She sat straight up, eyes wide when she received the news.
A few minutes later, Clary entered the kitchen to see Mackenzie finishing up a sugary cereal, chasing the final pieces around in the milk, and Jace leaning against the counter as he waited for the pancakes to reheat in the microwave. She walked over to him, kissing Mackenzie on the top of her head as she passed by, and wrapped her arms around him. Her cheek rest against his chest and she quietly inhaled the scent of him.
"Goodmorning, my beautiful Clary" he greeted her with a smile and wrapped his arms around her, his face in her hair.
"g'morning" her reply was muffled by the fabric of his t-shirt. She leaned upward and planted a kiss on his neck but he place a strong hand under her chin, lifting her face to his as he leant down to brush his lips against hers gently.
"I'm sorry, did we wake you?" He asked her while pushing a strand of hair behind her ear and the blush the arose on her cheeks was not missed by him.
"Actually..." she bit her lip nervously and pulled away so that there was distance between them "my phone woke me. A call from Dr. Heckley's office" she was avoiding eye contact now, starring at the floor.
Immediately his posture changed, he stood up straight and rigid and reached out for her hands "what's wrong?" His voice held an urgency as the panic had his heart racing
"What? No, nothing. Nothing's wrong" she calmed his fears quickly and then continued with clarification "Jace... I'm pregnant"
