Feeling the cold air prickle my throat, I gazed outside. The fresh wind blew my curled hair that had been styled up into a high-updo. One of my hands held onto the cold railing of the balcony while the other flailed in the open air. Holding the dark blue masquerade mask which I had taken off, I gazed into nothingness.
The sound from the many conversing people was suffocating inside. Being into the open air allowed me to breath again.
I looked up, staring at the only thing in the world that I always found beautiful, the stars.
The moon shone fully, enlightening the depressing darkness of the night with its smile. Holding onto my necklace, I saw the locket shine from the moonlight. I kissed the cold metal with my lips, hoping it would bring me closer to her. "I miss you...Mom." I whispered, hoping the wind would bring over the message and reach her.
A small tear drop left the corner of my eye, hitting the hard concrete floor. Splashing apart, it left a minuscule stain on the ground. However, it soon was covered by a black shadow that stood behind me. I instantly turned my back, only to face nothing but an empty space.
All of sudden, I heard screams erupt in the shining and dream-like ballroom. An ear-wrenching sound of shattering glass broke into the room, instantly catching my attention. I shifted my gaze to what was happening inside and saw many run in panic and scream for help. Holding onto their dresses, dialling the police or any source of help, I saw them desperately search for an escape.
People clothed in pitch black had bursted into the room and seemed to knock many people out. They didn't kill nor steal. It looked more as if they were in search for something. I noticed the concerned guards looking for me, to ensure my safety.
Having a bad feeling about this, I decided to go inside, but was quickly stopped when I felt a presence behind me. In reflex, I immediately turned around and saw a person who certainly wasn't there before.
I stepped backwards as his tall figure dangerously came closer and closer. Soon reaching the edge of the balcony, I realised there was no way out other than to jump off there. Yet, the question was, did I have the capability to jump? If I did and it went horribly wrong, I would die straightaway. Yet, I did not have much choice. It was either to escape or die or get kidnapped and then die. Ahh, what should I do?
As I was busy contemplating whether to do it or not, I saw him only threaten closer. His footsteps seemed to be the only thing I could hear, apart from my increasing heart rate. I could feel the panic slowly rise inside me and hastily scanned my surroundings instead. Yet, there was not a single object near with which I could protect myself.
By now, the distance between us had decreased a lot and gave me a clearer look of his appearance.
Not much was visible from his face as a black mask covered half of his face. Only his deep brown eyes which glistened in an despicable arrogance were revealed. His hair was neatly styled backwards and his clothes were strangely suitable for the party, as if he intentionally had done that to attend this place. The moment he stepped forwards and reached out for me, I quickly snapped out of my thoughts and slapped his hand away.
I felt my heart stop as he rapidly grasped my wrist instead.
"Le-let go of me!" I hissed while trying to wring myself out of his grip. But, he was much stronger than I had expected and he easily pulled me to his side.
Bumping against his chest, I saw him hold me back with his hand while he swiftly took out his knife with the other. I then felt the cold blade against my neck and instantly stopped struggling.
I heard him chuckle in amusement as he felt my body freeze in fear. "Don't move, Hwayoung." He whispered in my ear. "You're coming with me."
