A/N: I'm back guys! Thanks for keeping on, even when I had to go. I love you all! I'm getting so much better! So, this chapter is about a school day of Maka's. If, in previous chapters, I said something that makes them not in school at this point, please tell me what chapter it is. Thanks! I hope you all like it!
"Maka!" Soul yells. I groan and sit up.
"Whattaya want, you walking-talking-alarm clock?" I call back. He runs in and points to the calendar.
I forgot! We have school today! Wait, is this a good thing or a bad thing? After all, I love school, but I love sleep too...
No time to think, I need to get up! "Thanks, Soul, I'll be ready soon!"
He grins at me and walks to his room. I look at the clock. Thank goodness! I have an hour to get ready. Soul really is a good partner.
First things first, get that mess on my head under control. How am I supposed to look at Black*Star if this blonde thing is catching his eye? Not very easily, mind you.
Soon, I'm completely dressed, with my hair and teeth brushed, eating toast at the table. "It tastes minty fresh," I say, making a face. Soul laughs, spewing crumbs everywhere.
"Ew! This is a new skirt!" I screech. My partner covers his ears.
I sigh and clean up. It's just another day. I grab my school bag and drag Soul to his motorcycle. "Ugh, it's cold."
"Of course it is. We only have a week left until winter break," he says with an eye roll. I hold onto him tightly and he drives us to school.
Stein is in the classroom, smoking before the rush of everyone puts out his cigarette, or Papa tells him to throw it away. Whatever comes first. When he sees Soul and me, he turns to face us.
"Here early as usual, Maka." Something's different about him. He sounds the same, but I can't tell what it is about his appearance. I suppose I'll have to play the guessing game.
"Did you get a haircut, sir?"
"No."
"Did you lose weight, sir?"
He laughs at this one. "No."
"New lab coat?"
"No, Maka. Nothing new happened except I took a shower this morning."
Oh! That's it! He took a shower and his hair is all shaggy.
"Oh, well you look very nice," I say politely. He smiles lopsidedly.
"You don't have to hide the fact that you were puzzled."
My cheeks flush pink. "I didn't mean to!"
Right as he opens his mouth, the wave of students pours in from the doors. Stein's cigarette goes out and he groans. "To your seat, Maka. You as well, Soul."
Black*Star gestures for me to come sit with him, and I go up to the row. Soul follows, his eyes on Tsubaki. A smile fights its way onto my face. I'm glad that Soul is happy with her, and that she is happy with him. They both deserve to be happy. Soul's still limping a bit with his new leg, so I take his hand and guide him to a chair next to Tsubaki.
"Alright, today we're learning about dissection of pigs."
His drone nearly puts me to sleep but I have to concentrate. I focus on his wet hair, his yellow-green eyes, the way his face lights up when he comes to a particularly interesting part...
"Maka," Soul whispers. The entire class is looking at me, including Stein. I blush deeply.
"What was the question again?" I ask stupidly.
Stein clears his throat. "Never mind. Just see me after class."
"Yes, sir..." I mumble. Soul sends me a pitying glance, apologizing.
After class, I go up to Stein. "Sir, I'm really sorry-"
"Maka, is something wrong?" he interrupts. "You never daydream during a lesson, are you feeling okay?"
I blush again without knowing why. "Stomachache."
"Right, well, if it happens again, I'll have to give you detention. It isn't like you to ignore my words." He looks a bit worried, but brushes it off. "Anyways, I would like if you would come to my house so that we can discuss ways for you and Soul to get ahead far enough to go into the next level."
"This afternoon?" I ask. He nods. "Did you ask Soul already?" Another nod. "Alright then, let's go!"
I have to admit, I'm nervous. I haven't been to Stein's house since before the Con.
He and I walk to his house, making small talk to fill the silence in the wooded area surrounding his secluded home. My hand brushes against his frequently, but he never mentions it. The only sign that he realizes it is a slight tinge of pink on his cheeks.
"So, how are you and Azusa going?" I finally ask.
He shrugs. "We're not really going on dates, but she hasn't broken off the Christmas date. How about you and Black*Star?"
I blush and smile large. "He's a perfect gentleman to me. He takes me to simple dates and he buys me little things..."
"He sounds like a good boyfriend," Stein says. His tone is even, but I sense that there's something else beneath his cool exterior- maybe jealousy?
We arrive at his doorstep at a quarter to 5 o'clock(quarter to 17 o'clock for those of you with 24-hour clocks). He lets me in first and tells me to sit on the couch while he makes tea.
When he gets back with measuring cups as teacups, I can't help but giggle. "Don't you have a set of cups?" I ask.
"I never saw the need, really," he says nonchalantly.
I smile up at him. "Well, then I know what I'll give you for Christmas!"
"What?" he asks with an amused smile.
I wink and put a finger to my lips. "Secret!"
He laughs and puts a hand on my shoulder. "I see why Black*Star likes you, Maka. You're smart and funny!"
"Eh, I guess," I say, looking away. I'm blushing yet again. What is he doing to me?
His smile turns serious. "By the way, Maka," he says, "I'd watch your back if I were you. Some girls really like Black*Star, and some boys really like you, and jealousy is awful. Keep safe, alright?"
"Of course."
He sighs and drinks his tea. "You know, I was young once." He looks wistful. "And I once had my eyes on such a beautiful girl."
I nod to show I'm listening.
"But that's a story for another time."
He stands up and goes to a book case, taking a few books. I glance at the titles. They're all about soul resonance. I groan inside. Dang it.
Well, at least my tutor is attractive.
