In the late afternoon, two weeks from the funeral, Penelope decided that it was time to talk to her mother clearly of the things that had happened. So, she went and sat on the kitchen bar and seized the moment.
"Mom...", she said,"...we need to talk." The mother was mocking Penelope's blank expression, knowing that this day would come sooner rather than later.
"Okay.", said the mother. "Let's talk." She was hurt, feeling unknown, a complete stranger to herself.
Penelope told her mother of all the incidents that had conquered her childhood. The moment she finished crying and talking about it, Manny came into the house, he was at the gym.
"Why are you crying? Did she do something to you?", Manny said referring to their mother.
The mother looked puzzled. "Why are you talking like that! I'm your mother!", she said, "What did I ever do to you."
"Nothing, that's exactly what you did. Nothing!", he said angrily leaving the room. It became clear that he was very upset with her.
What else was there to do? Now the mother knew everything that happened to the both of them. Penelope told her what manny went through too. Which was her final concern, whether the blame was on her...
