Chapter Four - Captured

Three weeks had past and all I have done is training. I need to learn how to control my skills and I’m learning as many skills as I can from my parents. They have taught me how to use the elements around me to protect my physical self. Now I need to learn how to protect my mind.

They knew most of what I said before I said it and most of what I thought, except when I had wanted to keep it a secret. That’s how they knew what to do most of the time.

The fact that they have been sifting through my brain for my whole life is something that’s a little creepy.

“Now I want you to focus. Try to build that wall.” It was day 2 of mind control training and dad was trying to get me to block people out. It’s the hardest thing I have ever done. “That’s good. Now build a little more.” He was looking into my mind as I was bringing up a barrier between us and he could see that wall being put up. He also fought against me to make me stronger.

The wall was almost up when I faltered. I was drained of energy. “Maybe we should let you rest for a moment.” Was mum’s contribution, so without confirmation from dad, I went to bed. When I woke it was mum’s turn to train me. Luckily I haven’t had anymore of those dreams. Though each night a small part of me longs to see his face again.

“Now I want you to think of something passionate and of love.” My mind flipped through moments before resting on my dream. A boy with eyes as blue as the night sky, the look of hurt and love as he drove the dagger into my heart. I could feel a tear slip down my cheek and could hear the intake of breath from both my parents.

I opened my eyes to see that they were happily surprised. “You did it. The wall came up within seconds.” I focused on the wall around my thoughts and it was stronger than ever. I could feel their minds trying to break in but it was stronger than them. They couldn’t get in no matter how hard they tried.

He was what made me strong and yet for some reason each time I thought of him my knees and hands would start to shake with longing. He didn’t just make me strong. He made me weak too. I went down to the waters edge and walked till I found a nice little rock pool where nobody would find me.

“Hello.” A small voice said. I looked around for the owner and my eyes fell on Jeremy. The only friend I have ever had.

“Jeremy?! How did you find me?” It was odd that he had shown up here. My parents had seen him as a threat and tried to get us away from him.

I looked around hoping that no one could see us. “My parents made me come out here a few weeks ago. They increased my training and I’ve been coming out here in my spare time.”

“My parents said that you wanted to hurt me. Kill me even.” I don’t know what made me say it but I did.

“Why would I want to hurt you? You’re my only friend Scarlet.” And with those simple words all my worry about what he wanted to do disappeared. I flung myself into his arms, which threw him off balance for a moment, landing us both on the ground.

Jeremy and I sat and talked by the little rock pool for a few hours before I could hear someone coming towards us. “It’s my mum. If she knows that I’ve been talking to you she’ll freak. Quick hide behind that rock.”

I did as he told me and waited there until he and his mother left. I could only just hear what she said to him. “You need to stop this. You’re late for training again. Do you really think you will be able to catch them without being fully trained?” And with that she took Jeremy by the arm and all but dragged him out of my sight.

On my way home I came to the conclusion that I wouldn’t tell my parents about my run in with Jeremy. I didn’t know what they would do to him if they knew and I didn’t want to lose him again.

I fell asleep quickly only to be thrown into a dream. I was on a beach, forest on one side and water on the other. There he was: the boy from my dream. He stood as I analysed him.

I could see him a bit better, I noticed that he was probably a couple years older than me. He was fit and muscular with the air of someone who knew that girls would fall for him within moments.

I had fallen so deep into my thoughts when I realised he had spoken. He chuckled and repeated his sentence. “I have been trying to reach you. Your impeccably hard to communicate with you know.”

I nodded, not sure of what to do. Who was this guy?

“I’m Maxwell. But you can call me Max. I know you have many questions but before I answer them you need to understand that I am trying to help you.”

I found my voice. “But you killed me in that dream. How could you want to help me if you killed me?”

“Someone else put that vision into your head because it is the future but they have changed it. I have been protecting your mind at night from who ever it is. I believe you have a connection to them and they’re using that against you.”

“But I don’t know anyone. All I have is my parents.” And Jeremy I added in my mind.

He must have heard that because his next question was: “Who is Jeremy?”

“He’s a friend. He lives on the other side of the island. He would never hurt me. He said so himself.”

“Maybe he won’t.”

After a few moments thought Max said goodbye and let me sleep in peace.

***

I woke the next morning on a beach in the middle of nowhere. It was the same beach as the one that I was on with Max.

I walked through the forest and after a few hours of walking I was able to get home. I stumbled into the kitchen to find mum and dad in panic mode trying to find me.

“Where were you?”

I lied. That’s all I could do because if they knew about the dream they would put me back into lock down mode and I wouldn’t be able to Max or Jeremy again. “I went for a run. I couldn’t sleep and forgot to write a note. Sorry.” My parents relaxed and started on my training.

We worked hard for the next 3 weeks. I didn’t get to see Max or Jeremy but I was becoming aware of someone watching me.

After a particularly intense training session I walked down to the beach. I could feel him near by so I ducked out of sight from my parents.

“Who are you? What do you want from me?”

As if defeated Max walked out from behind a tree. He was so much more attractive in person. “I told you, I’m protecting you.”

He hardly got the words out when someone hit him in the head, knocking him unconscious. I hardly had time to react when someone else did the same to me.

All I remember seeing was Max’s crumpled body lying on the ground.
