This "legend" is actually very true and has happened more than once. The first occurrence of this happened in Las Vegas.

A couple were on their honeymoon just after their wedding. They looked for a decent hotel around the area they wanted to go to and were happy when they found one that looked suitable.

When they arrived to this hotel they were shown to their room which was on the 3rd floor. When they walked into the room, immediately there was a foul stench coming from the room. Not wanting to bother the hotel staff and complain, they just opened a window. The smell grew weaker but was still there. They had had enough and decided to complain at the front desk. One of the workers followed the couple up to their room and checked everywhere for a place the smell could come from but found nothing.

Later that night the couple got into bed but soon noticed how un comfortable the mattress was. Then the smell came back even stronger. They got out of bed and made their way down stairs and demanded to see the manager. The manager went to their room and helped them look. They realised the stench was coming from the bed. They lifted up the mattress and saw blood under it followed by a wave of that horrid smell. The manger called for someone to come up and help him. When the other worker arrived at the room they cut open the mattress revealing a corpse of a young woman that looked like it had been there for quite a while.

Let's just say the couple left there and never went back.

There have been reports of this happening in many hotels around the world. Some are in the mattress itself, some under the mattress and even in the back of the closet. Be careful when staying in a hotel and make sure you check for dead bodies.
