I was called up to the stage to greet the princess. "Presenting the Princess D!" a retainer announced. Applause erupted from the crowd.

I waited to finally see the princess. And waited. And waited a little more. The D kingdom retainers became very anxious, especially when one came from one of the back rooms and started to whisper in one of the other retainer's ears. I wanted to eavesdrop a little but it wouldn't have helped much. I don't speak D.

Finally, a translator came forward and announced "Due to certain circumstances, Princess D will not be making an appearance. We apologise for any inconvenience."

The guests started whispering to each other at this, the overall effect not unlike that of wind through dry leaves. I approached the translator who appeared to be accusing major Bourgeois of kidnapping the princess.

"Can I be of any assistance?" I asked, eager to resolve whatever had happened.

The translator turned to me. She was very tall and elegant and had shoulder-length wavy chocolate hair and pale skin. When she spoke, her voice had a slight accent. "We shall be fine," she said coldly, her bright-green eyes showing complete and utter contempt, before turning to leave.

I tried again. "If I know what's going on, perhaps I can help?"

"I do not even know if I can trust you."

"That won't stop me from helping you."

The translator looked as if she was about to say something. I was suprised when she simply nodded.

"Did you lose Princess D?" I asked.

"And the treasure."

"Do you think that they've been taken?"

"If so, it has to have been an inside job. Our security is too tight for an outsider to penetrate."

"So, do you have any suspicions as to where they are now?"

As if on cue, a side door was flung open to reveal a girl about my age in a dark purple ballgown. She could have been any other guest at the ball but for 3 defining features. Firstly, the elaborate tiara on her head marking her as a princess. Secondly, the beautifully crafted chest under her arm which I knew instantly to be the treasure. Finally, her hair, which was waving around like snakes. Wait, no, it was snakes.

"I am Princess Gorgon, the main event!"
