Short summary: Cas feels guilty, Gabe is missing? (Alfie!) and Cas is second-guessing himself.

-----

It took a moment for Dean's words to truly sink in.

"You've...you've lost someone, too?" Castiel asked, pulling away from their embrace to watch Dean's expression.

"Yeah," Dean said. "My mother."

Castiel could see Dean's once joyous green gems fade with sadness. "...May I ask about her?"

Dean sighed and leaned back, placing his head over Castiel's lap again. The light haired teen took Castiel's hand into his hold, intertwining their fingers and placing them over his chest. Even though the prince's heart paced faster at the intimate hand-holding, he forced himself to stay quiet and calm for Dean to speak.

"You know that I'm half-and-half. Part dragon, part human," Dean started.

Castiel nodded, feeling the smooth green scales under his fingertips.

"My mother was the human part," Dean continued. "She was beautiful, and always nice; but maybe that's just the nostalgia, huh?" He chuckled dryly. "She had the brightest blonde hair and pretty blue eyes. She used to always make me pie," he said in a whisper. "She was never afraid of dragons. Never. Father always talked about her like she was the bravest woman alive 'cause she never feared anything."

"She sounds quite amazing," Castiel smiled down at the half-dragon, momentarily forgetting his own shyness.

Dean sighed with a nostalgic smile, turning his attention to the teen over him. His other hand reached up to cup Castiel's face soothingly. "I wish she could meet you."

Castiel pulled away at the words, feeling his heart just about ready to pound out of his chest. Zachariah's words were ringing in his head on repeat, reminding him that he wasn't supposed to be there, sharing loving whispers to another when he was promised to his kingdom.

"What's wrong?" Dean asked. "Did I say something?"

"No, I just...Can you take me back to the farm?" He asked.

"Already? Was there something I-"

"It's not anything you did," Castiel interrupted. "I just need to be back home earlier today...princely duties."

Dean's eyes showed slight hurt, to which Castiel couldn't bear to look at, so he stood and waited until the other relented and took him back through the maze of caves.

That night, Castiel slept like a sinking stone.

Only one more day.

Castiel had never felt dread quite like it. He wasn't just signing his own soul's contract by choosing a bride, but he was signing the bride's as well.

Gabriel was nowhere to be found, though Castiel brushed it off as his younger brother hiding from his lessons. He was a very rambunctious child, and especially hated it when his tutors would take his sweets away from him.

With an hour set aside for his Sunday prayers, Castiel then walked around the kitchens of the castle to see if anyone had seen his younger brother. A few gold coins were tucked safely into his breast pocket, to be used for when Castiel went to the villages.
