I squinted from the sun peeking from behind the horizon. Rising up, I wiped the sleep from my eyes. My good mood was erased as I remembered the events from the day before. Looking at my hands, I snapped watching the small flame appear. That's my power, human night-light. How wonderful!!
"Wake up maggots!" Chad yelled imitating an army general. "Rise and shine!"
His call was responded to by yawns as everyone else rose to the sound of his voice.
"I suggest you maggots wake up and grab a granola bar because we're on the move today!"
"Excuse me, I prefer not to be called a 'maggot'" Amy said.
"Oh, I'm sorry Amy. I was just caught up in the moment."
After taking the time to prepare the new day, we was back walking in the grass.
"You guys might want to gather some of the water from the river because the fire territory is no joke!"
"Fire territory. High in Magmanians. Known for it's excessive heat, and successful metal industries." Amy began mumbling excessive facts.
"Yes, correct as usual Ms. Marshall."
Following everyone else's actions, I walked over to the river crouching down to fill my canteen. If I could do more than just light a fire, and maybe produce a little water here and there; I wouldn't have to do this. But until then, I'm forced to collect this water from the river. Sometimes I wonder what it would've been like if my mother would've stayed and cared for me. Taught me how to use my powers. Fed me. Did the things a normal mom would have. But, I guess you can't wish for normal when you're not.
Suddenly, it's like an invisible hand pushed me into the lake, drenching my clothes with water. When thinking about who would do this, only one name came to my mind.
"DREW!" Kaitlyn said before I could even respond to Drew's ignorance.
Kaitlyn using her telekinesis easily lifted me out of the stream of water.
"Thanks." I said acknowledging her help.
Trying to dry off some kind of way, I quickly flicked on the fire in my hand. I turned it down to nothing more than a small sheet of heat laying in the palm of my hand. I slowly dried my body with my new handheld dryer evaporating much of the water that soaked my clothes.
"Nice!" Chad said recognizing the use of my ability.
"Oh it was nothing." I responded. Others flew, while all I could do is become a BIC lighter. This was nothing extraordinary.
"Yes it was, Marcus!" Chad said with an ethusiastic tone. "Not only, did you use your ability, but you also used it in a creative way for a good use.
"Thanks, I guess." I said, feeling bothered by the collective eyes that now stared at me.
"And as for you Drew." Chad begun, "Knock it off."
For a while later, we walked foward through the grass. After a while, the grass was no longer green. Then, the dull gray grass writhered resulting patches of sand here and there.
"We're getting closer to the fire territory." Cameron said bending down to run his fingers through the sand.
"No duh, Sherlock." Kaitlyn playfully said beginning to panic. "Can't you see my hair is sweating like crazy!"
"Keep calm you guys." Chad encouraged us. "Do you guys think this would be a good time to do a little training?"
"Yeah I guess." Cameron said.
"Okay, do you guys mind if I just work with Marcus today?"
After everyone responded in unison, Chad slowly pulled me to the side.
"What everyone else doesn't know is that those canteens won't be enough to survive through the fire territory!"
"So, what am I supposed to do?"
"I was relying on you to try to at least develop you water ability."
"Develop what and how?"
"Your water ability Marcus!"
"I can barely use my fire ability, yet alone water!"
"Well, if not, all of us will die from dehydration without you!"
"You brought all of us out here, expecting them to rely on me! Just me!"
"Yes you!"
"You knew what I was capable of, and manipulating water is definitely not one!"
"Marcu...."
But before he could continue, I had already walked away. Heading to the river, I thought about the pressure I had on me. How was I, Marcus Mendez, expected to become this great savior? I thought about the man that brought me that message, the day I ran away. Did he expect me to be some super hero, with all sorts of spectacular powers? What do they expect of me? All I've got is a match in the palm of my hands.
At this time, Chad had called everyone else over to him preparing to practice with each one of them. But, I, remained at the side of the river. Thinking. Pondering. Stressing. I looked down at my reflection. Same light skin, messy black hair, and blue eyes, but now I could control fire. I was also supposed to control earth, and electricity, and no telling what else. So much was expecting from this average person!
But I had to realize, I'm not an average person. The average person hasn't thrown a fireball halfway across the room at his dad. The average person hadn't been chase through the woods by a bunch of policemen.
The average person hasn't had to live his whole life without his mom.
Looking at the river, I focused. I slowly raised my palm over the water. Lifting it with my mind, I tried. I tried. Not realizing I was holding my breath, I exhaled dropping the little bit over water I had pulled from the river.
I tried again.
Remembering to breathe, I focused. I imagined the water rising. Higher and higher. Before long, I had created a ball of water in the palm of my hand. Turning around, I found Drew. Launching my arm back I fired. Watching the ball fly through the air, I anticipated to hit Drew. But, right before it could hit him. He moved.
And guess who was right behind him!
Kaitlyn.......
What have I done?
