Chapter 4: Scelerats
“Hurry,” Darian said.
“What’s going on,” I asked eager to know where I was running and what for.
It’s not that I didn’t want to go. I just wanted to know what was happening so I could prepare myself for whatever was going to happen. I just obeyed his orders, and followed him to where I was going. I just couldn’t figure out what he needed me for. I had no training. I could barely form a ball of fire in my hand. What use would I do? I hope my A in P.E. would be beneficial.
“Marcus,” Darian called.
“Sir,” I answered.
“What you are about to see are some monsters called scelerats,” he informed.
“Okay,” I said as I followed him.
“Marcus get your blade ready,” he ordered, “there are minions of Zane trying to infiltrate the building.”
“I’m listening,” I said to let him know.
“I want you to fight them.”
“But…… Darian I’ve barely had any training.”
“I know, but I have great faith in you,” he said, “I know you can do this or I wouldn’t have called you.”
“Alright,” I replied and continued to follow him.
“Marcus… stop,” he yelled.
I obeyed. He placed his hand on me concentrating. I watched in confusion. I suddenly saw that that same glow that I saw when he healed his daughter grow. I saw this bright flash which made me close my eyes. When I opened my eyes I was covered in blue armor. I stared at it in amazement.
“Marcus you can have it.”
“Thanks,” I said growing fond of my new armor. I barely noticed any weight of it.
We turned a corner to see some men pressing up against the doors.
“Good you’re here,” a man told Darian; “I don’t think we can hold the door any longer.”
“Okay good thing were…..” he replied being interrupted by a huge blast.
The door literately broke. All I saw were men slicing through the scelerats like butter. I wanted to stand back, but the action was calling me. I pulled out my blade and dashed into the action. I moved with great agility. Every step I took, I thought about what Chad taught me.
I charged at one scelerats with a battle ax in his hand. He thrust his ax at me. I dodged his attack and turned around guiding my sword into his back. I gazed in astonishment as the scelerat fell to the floor. He was the first person (or monster or creature or whatever you want to call it) I’ve ever killed.
A scelerat broke my stare when it punched me in the back of my head sending me into the granite floor. I could have sworn that I blacked out for a second. I turned over to see him lunge toward me. I had an idea. I quickly made a fire ball in the palm of my hand. When he thought he had me I shoved the palm of my hand directly into the center of his face. He gripped his faced and screeched in agony. I watched him when suddenly, I ducked.
(I know you’re wondering what for.) I didn’t know what I ducked for at the moment. I soon knew why when I saw a flail fly right over my head flying right for the scelerat in front of me. Luckily, my instinct was on my side. I spun around sweeping the scelerat that was behind me right off his feet. I aimed my sword and sent it right into his chest. I was ready to kill my fourth scelerat when they suddenly started to retreat.
I watched as the scelerats ran off. I couldn’t help but ask myself “why they aborted”. No one just leaves a fight without a reason. I asked myself several questions. What was their reason to come? Did they achieve their goal before they left?
“Marcus you did well for your first fight,” Darian said, “I observed small parts of your fight, and you do have what it takes.”
“Thanks,” I replied.
“Although, you had little training for today, you did better than many people do during their first fight.”
I grinned, feeling good about all the praise for doing so little.
“Darian can I ask you something,” I asked.
“Ask away.”
“What did they come for?”
“I don’t know we just had warnings from people that guard the door that they were coming. So, we fought back.”
“Okay,” I replied taking everything in.
“Marcus you can go ahead and go to your room.”
“Okay see you tomorrow,” I said.
“Alright, Marcus,” he said back.
(Any suggestions? Please comment. What do you think they came for?)
