“You finally answered!” Mia gasped with sarcastic relief in her tone. I could just picture her clutching her chest like it was aching.
I laughed, “What’s up buttercup?” I pressed the phone to my ear with my shoulder and picked up everything I’d dropped.
“I need to go shopping for a dress. My parents have this cocktail party on the weekend and I’m supposed to be there, so come shopping with muah?” Mia sounded hopeful.
“Hell yeah! No way am I missing dress shopping.” I did a victory punch in the air dumping everything in the bin.
“I’ll be right over, where do you live now?” Mia asked.
I bit my lip, “You sure you want to come over? I mean my mom’s home and all.”
“Yeah, I got some things to say to that bitch.” Mia spat and I felt my heart warm knowing she cared for me.
“Keep it PG ‘kay?” I teased before rambling the address off to Mia who scribbled it down then hung up.
I spun round seeing Angie at the door. She smiled giving me a dangerous look. “Your best friend huh? Nathaniel Sommers. We’ll see about that after I get through to him. I’m going to enjoy ruining your life.” Then she turned and hollered downstairs. “Mum! Jordan’s slacking off! She’s calling her friends instead of cleaning my room.”
My mother appeared thirty seconds later at the door. She gave Angie a reassuring smile and then held out her hand, “your mobile.”
“No,” I spat out through gritted teeth.
Then the unexpected happened. Sharp pain tingled through my left cheek as my mother struck out. She looked just as shocked as I was but covered it up before snatching the mobile out of my hand scraping a little skin off in the process.
“You’ll get it back when you learn your place,” she hissed at me. Angie shot me a snarky look before crossing her arms.
“Well hurry up, get on with it bitch.”
The anger flared again. I pushed it away while Angie continued to talk.
“Then there’s also that Mia. The slut who thinks cartoon characters on a tie is cool.” Angie sniffed distastefully.
I wanted to scream at her but I held my tongue. Knowing her, what she wanted was for me to scream at her. So she could tell mother who’d taken their side.
Saved by the bell. Mia must have found the house. It wasn’t that hard considering its size. I ditched everything I was doing leaving an annoyed Angie in her own room and made for the door.
“You must have gotten the wrong house. No way are my daughters’ friends with… with you.” Mom gestured to all of Mia taking in her appearance.
In my mother’s book, anyone who wasn’t blond and blue-eyed wasn’t worth talking to. That unfortunately included me.
“Jordan!” Mia’s enthusiasm was genuine as she saw me pushing my shocked mother aside ad pulling me into a hug.
My mother grabbed my arm in a grip that was hard to ignore. “Excuse us for a moment,” she nodded at Mia with a fake smiled before dragging me into the kitchen.
“How dare you! Why did you tell my address to some… tramp without telling me?” Her blue eyes were cold and dead.
“Mia is not a tramp,” I pried her hand off my arm glaring at her. “She’s a good friend who’ll make a better sister than the two bitches living with me!”
