Gone Girl

This is it, I'm gone. A fresh breeze sings beneath my wings like hot bath water, lit up in the early morning light, the tips yellow and glowing in the night. Dad flew confidently beside me, his wings far more magnificent than mine but that never mattered. Everyone I knew had different wings, like boobs, they come in all different shapes and sizes.

We waved goodbye to Mom early before we left, shrinking all of my suitcases and shoving them in our pockets before pushing off the roof and into the sky. Into my favourite place.

The air smelt thickly of salt, the clouds thick and grey at this point but I hoped it would clear up by the time we got there. I had my flying jacket on too, I've always had a jacket made specifically for defying the climate of the sky ever since I was a kid. No one else I know has one, but I don't know anyone who's parents are as protective of mine. I still couldn't shake the fact that I was going to New York right now, even as the wind blew past me, tangling my hair, the salt scrunching it as though I'd been in the ocean.

"Excited?" Dad shouted over the sound of the wind. His skin beamed gold in the early dawn and his eyes were electric, looking over to me and smiling.

I nod, grinning back. "So what's the plan?" I ask, swinging my arms out by my sides like a bird.

He smiled at me, "We have to stay hidden, when you're there you'll be taught to use symbols called Runes and then you'll be able to fly wherever you want." I tried to hide my confusion, no one told me about that. But it did sound cool. I imagined flying through New York would make me feel like spiderman, but more graceful.

"We'll drop you as far away from the crowds as I can,"

"We'll have to get the subway,"

I've never been on a subway before, so many firsts today, I think to myself. The excitement of it sizzled in my chest like a sparkler, gaining momentum the closer we got.

"When was the last time you were in New York," I twisted round so I could fly on my back, wishing I had thought to bring ear muffs.

"Before The War, definitely," He told me. Everybody knew about the war, every single piece, we were taught in in school.

"What about Jace?" He asked, looking over to me with a solemn look, pulling the subject away from the past.

"What about him?"I swerved.

"Will he visit?"

"Of course he will," I tell him, his mouth stretching in a sign of knowing.

"But I told him not to come for a while." I say, looking down at the grassy fields we pass with ease.

"Not until I'm settled, at least,"

"Maybe it's for the best, this way you can make new friends," Daniel said, shutting his eyes against the chilly wind that made his eyeballs feel like gobstoppers in his head.

"Yeah, a new start," Aurora agreed, uncertainty coating her tone.
