Chapter Seven
I woke up at 12 but not because of the alarm. I opened my eyes to see to faces perched directly above me. "Holy Crap!" I scream. Lurching forward and smacking heads with Cody and Greyson.
A chorus of "Ows" breaks the beautiful golden morning filled with the irritably pleasant chirping of red birds. "Mornin' to you too." Cody says rubbing his forehead with his hand. Greyson is taking part in the same action, rigorously massaging his forehead.
"I'm sorry, I did not expect my best friends to scare the heck out of me in the morning. Especially when today I'm sleeping in."
I fluff my pillow and close my eyes again. "Nope you aren't." Greyson says pulling off my covers revealing my tanktop and short shorts. I cover my face with a pillow.
"Yes I am." There is silence and I assume I have won. But you know what you do when you assume.
Two strong arms lift under me and take me out of the bed. "Stop!" I scream. "Lemme sleep!" When Cody doesn't put me down I go to last resort. "Rape!" I shout slightly laughing. No way could I ever shout that being serious. Unless, you know, it was serious.
Greyson is watching us and opens the door with Cody still carrying me. I writhe in his arms but he won't let go. Stupid swimmer's muscles.
Cody exposes me to the sunlight and plops me down gently on the concrete. "Look." he commands. I observe my surroundings and find all the neighbors setting up for the fourth of July.
Blue, red, and white banners hang from houses everywhere. Greyson's and Cody's parents are all cooking hotdogs and hamburgers. My mouth waters at the sight. Let's not forget my rude awakening and the absence of nutrients in my body.
"We thought you'd like to help." Greyson finishes smiling. They know me too well. I would absolutely love this. I hug them both and the shocks are gone with Greyson. 'Maybe it was a one time thing' I think to myself. What surprises me is I hug Cody too and I feel the sparks but they are even stronger than Greyson's. He pulls back quickly and looks down at his hands. "What the?"
He gets cut off by my mother kissing me good morning and my father ordering clothes on me. Once I have changed into a t-shirt and jeans, Greyson and Cody are working hard. I smile at them and help them with painting signs. Of course, with me being me I must add fun to this.
I take the blue paint and draw a flower on Greyson's face. He smirks and draws a heart on me. Out of the corner of my eye I see Cody looking with us at the same look he had a month ago.
For some reason my mind goes back to what my mother said last night. Could Cody like me? I always thought he liked Gisela. They seemed to click. That had to be it. With Greyson I knew I liked him. I didn't know if he liked me or not but the more I thought about it the more I wanted him to. I brush off the thought and to satisfy Cody I draw a star on his face.
He smiles widely and takes paint and paints a word on my face. "What'd you put on me?" I question pulling out my phone to see. In green letters I make out the word swagge. I roll my eyes laughing to myself and continue painting.

"Happy fourth of July, party people!" Gisela screams at the top of her lungs. The darkness seems to bring out her personality. I hug her and bring her over to the very festive guys. By now their faces are covered with red, white, and blue. Courtesy of moi.
Gisela bursts out laughing at their faces. "Eh, I'm still sexy right?" Cody says.
Gisela nods and answers sarcastically, "Totally." He laughs and they walk off to get some coke.
"Hey can I talk to you for a second?" Greyson asks barely giving me time to nod before dragging me off behind the house. "Shelby, we're best friends right?" I nod at this ridiculous question it was obvious. "And I don't want to ruin our friendship but I can't take it anymore. Shelby, I like you more than a friend and more than a best friend and I was wondering if you'd be my girlfriend?"
My world stops. Thinking over this past month. I wanted to say yes so bad but part of me couldn't. I didn't want to ruin our friendship. I couldn't stand the thought of us not being friends. But I say yes anyway.
"Yeah, I will as long as we make an agreement. No matter what happens we will always be friends. Pinky promise." He looks at my petite outstretched pinky.
"Pinky promise." He intertwines his pinky with mine and I can't help but smile.
"Shouldn't we be getting back to the party?" I ask.
"Whatever my beautiful girlfriend wants." I giggle at that word. It fits so perfectly and I love it. He laces his hand with mine and we walk back. The first person we pass by is Cody.
And he's giving Greyson a weird look. For an odd reason Greyson pulls me tighter to him and looks back at Cody. What was going on?
I don't have time to question them because fireworks go off in the sky creating a cascade of colors. I search for Gisela, wanting her to see this but when I find her I decide to leave her there. She was in Cody's arms kissing him. I knew it.
Greyson wraps his arm around me and pulls me into his warmth. I absorb the moment. Gisela and Cody, me and Greyson, all of our parents and siblings talking and laughing. I capture the moment in my head imagining a camera and clicking save. It felt perfect being here and I wanted to stay like this forever.
"You're beautiful Shelby Marie Cosway." Greyson whispers in my ear. I feel myself blush and look at him soaking in his every perfect detail.
"And you are perfect Greyson Michael Chance." He smiles and looks up at the skies. When the fireworks finished there is only one thing left above us. Stars.
