His hand hovered over the glass door knob. Noel held his breath, unsure of what to do. Although Kaita was still a stranger to him, he knew that she was a good person, which meant that she deserved to live a normal life. A life free from the troubles that the supernatural world had to offer. But, this was his best bet. Noel hesitantly knocked on the door, praying that he made the right decision.
" Come in," a smoky voice requested. Chills went down Kaita's spine. The man's voice was as smooth as the ocean on a breeze-less day. The sweet sound invited Kaita in, making her drift closer to voice. Noel pulled her back, gently pinning her against the wall. He leaned down and whispered into her ear.
" Listen to me, Kaita," he murmured, moving back to look into her glazed eyes. "Promise me something," Noel whispered into her ear. His breaths tickled Kaita's skin, waking her up from her trance.
" Yes," she finally answered. Her cheeks flushed red as Noel moved closer to her neck.
" Don't speak so loud," he hushed, covering her soft lips with his hand. Kaita furrowed her eyebrows, trying to escape from his hold. "Just wait," Noel urged, removing his palm from her mouth. " Promise me that you'll always be you," he hastily whispered. "Whatever happens after this, don't let it change you."
Her eyes widened and her lips parted. Shocked by his sudden request, Kaita's only reaction was to nod in agreement.
" I don't have all day, you know," the man sighed, waiting for the two to come into his office. Noel turned the knob and entered the room.
The first thing Kaita noticed was the wine-colored drapes that fell from the window. They swayed in the wind, guiding Kaita's focus to the center of the room, where a young man sat. He was seated in a large armchair which was situated behind an antique wooden desk, and his long legs were crossed in a proper manner. She thought him peculiar, noticing how his jet-black hair ran down to his back and his clothes which seemed rather old fashion. Then, she focused on his face and his soft, baby-like features. If Kaita hadn't heard his voice, then she might have mistaken him for a stunning young woman.
" I'm Headmaster Barone. I'm delighted to meet such an exquisite girl," he greeted. His thin lips were upturned into a faint smile, and his amber eyes twinkled with pleasure.
" Kaita Hayes. The pleasure is mine," she said moving closer to Barone, taking a seat across from him. Noel quickly followed and hovered over her. He watched as the headmaster scanned over Kaita, examining her every movement.
" Noel informed me about your memory loss," Barone voiced, smiling as he saw her squirm under his piercing gaze.
" Yes, I don't remember how I got to Quinsten or why I'm here," she revealed.
Barone gave her a look of sympathy and reached over the desk to grab her hand. " Set your mind at rest," Barone reassured her. " I'm sure that I can be of some assistance."
Then, out of the blue, his fingers grabbed Kaita's head and his eyes closed shut. Kaita felt a jolt of electricity go through her head. She tried to move away, but she was paralyzed. The only thing that she could do was to look at Barone, whose face was concentrated but relaxed at the same time.
He seems experienced at whatever it is that he's doing, Kaita thought to herself, watching his serene appearance. However, suddenly his face contorted into a pained grimace and he abruptly let go of Kaita.
" Well did it work? Did you see anything?" Noel eagerly asked. Barone shook his head. A blank expression rested on his face. His long nails raked through his hair and he sighed.
" What was that?" Kaita asked, finally able to voice her thoughts. Beads of sweat dropped from her forehead, and she found herself panting hard.
" What a strange girl," Barone remarked, examining Kaita once more.
" You're to be enrolled into this high school immediately. I hope you have a warm welcome," he smiled.
" What do you mean," Noel screeched, trying to pull Kaita away from Barone, but she remained seated. Why is it always the vampires who can't resist a human, Noel wondered, glaring at Barone, who gave Kaita a open-mouthed smile, showing her his set of sharp fangs. Kaita's face went pale upon noticing a splosh of red on Barone's white collar. Maybe it's just wine, Kaita gulped, cautiously sliding her chair back. Her heart rate accelerated, and of course, he could hear that.
