Chapter Two: Everything Has Changed
Spencer's POV:
"Hi, honey," Spencer replied, and as she opened the door and invited him in, he gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.
Jack Connor had been her boyfriend since her last year of college a year ago.
"Sorry," she had apologized to him while helping him pick up his recently dropped books. She accidentally knocked over his books as she was rushing to the class she was about to be late for.
She looked at his face and noticed how his chocolate brown hair was slightly covering his eyes matching in color.
"It's fine," he had replied picking up the rest of his books.
She ran the rest of the way to class, barely missing being late, with the image of the stranger still swimming fresh in her brain and eyes.
A couple days later, her friend invited her over to a party at her apartment. After being there for about an hour, she got up and walked over to the kitchen table to get some punch.
Just as she was reaching for the ladle, her hand was touched by somebody else's reaching at the same time.
Looking up to try and identify the person, she recognized him as the person who's books she knocked over a couple days ago.
"Hey!" she practically shouted, caught by surprise.
"Hey," he replied smoothly. When she realized her hand was still touching his, she pulled away quickly like she was just electrocuted.
"Are you going to knock over my punch, too?" he teased, pouring a cup of punch for her and then himself.
"Maybe, unless you give me a good reason not to," she threatened, taking the cup from his hand and taking a sip.
"How about you get to know me and I'll get to know you, and we'll call it even?" he compromised.
"Deal," she agreed. She stuck out her hand and introduced herself. "By the way, I'm Spencer. Spencer Reyes."
"Jack. Jack Connor," he replied as he shook her hand.
One thing led to another, and by the end of the night, they had each other's number. Within a couple weeks, they were together.
"So where are you going?" Jack asked Spencer, pulling her from the past and forcing her back to the present.
"I'm going to my best friend from high school's house for a week. You didn't answer your phone," she answered, lip puckered out in faux sadness.
Jack pulled out his phone to find three missed calls and seven unopened messages.
"Sorry," he apologized. "I was doing some extra work at the office that I had to make up for."
"It's okay," Spencer replied shrugging it off. "It's not that big of a deal. I'll only be gone from Sunday to Sunday. I just finished packing."
Zipping up her suitcase and hanging up her dress on the door so it wouldn't get wrinkled, she took her blonde, wavy hair out of its ponytail, shook it out, and raked her fingers through it, symbolizing a hard day's work had come to an end.
"Now that my work here is done," Miranda started, getting up, "I'll be leaving. Bye, Spencer. Have a good time!"
She hugged her best friend, hugged Jack goodbye, and left.
"So," Jack started out. "Who are you spending the week with?"
"His name is Cody Henry, and we were best friends in high school. We did everything together," she replied. She omit the part about her being so deeply in love with him that her heart throbbed at the memory of him.
"Sounds like it'll be fun," Jack grinned. "Try not to miss me too much, and I'll do the same."
Spencer playfully punched him on the arm, and gave him a kiss.
"I'm going to bed, and my flight leaves at 7 tomorrow morning," she informed him.
It was going to take a little while to get from New York to North Carolina.
"Okay," he said taking off his shoes, socks, shirt, and pants. He put on his pajama bottoms, then climbed into their bed.
Spencer got undressed and redressed into her pajamas, and climbed into bed with him.
She had her back to him, so he rested his arm over her and they both drifted off to sleep.
