Chapter Seven: Let The Games Begin

Spencer's POV:

To make the fifteen minute drive more enjoyable, Spencer blasted the radio. She was unable to contain her smile and burst out laughing when Cody started singing to the song that just came on very off pitch. It was really cute. She joined in with him, but tried a little harder than he did to actually hit the notes.

After about 5 songs passed, they made it to the beach. The moment the car stopped, Cody looked at her with a serious expression.

"Spencer," he said seriously.

"What?" she asked, unsure of his sudden behavior.

She was staring into his eyes trying to figure him out, and didn't notice his hand reaching across the space.

He quickly locked her door and hopped out of his side of the car.

"Last one to beach is a rotten egg!" he shouted grabbing his boogie board and starting to run towards the beach.

He tricked her! She unlocked the door, jumped out of the car, snagged her boogie board, and started running to catch up with Cody. That little sneak!

Cody was laughing uncontrollably hard, and stopped to let her catch up. However, she didn't stop with him and proceeded to run right past him.

She made it to the beach where she fell down, exhausted from running the whole way there.

When Cody finally reached her, she teased, "Rotten egg, right here!"

She laughed and pointed to him.

"Hey! You cheated!" he accused.

"I didn't cheat. You stopped running. You could've titled me as that, but I didn't make you," she declared with an air of finality. "So, ready to catch some waves?"

"Totally," he replied, smiling so much he couldn't keep his mouth closed showing off his straight, perfect white teeth.

She took off her outer clothes she was wearing. When she finished, she caught Cody staring at her. She must have blushed crimson.

To avoid the awkwardness, right before taking off towards the water, she shouted, "Then what are we waiting for?!"

"Nothing!" he yelled, taking off his shirt and running towards her to catch up. How badly she wanted to stare at him! He had gotten more muscular since the last time she saw him, and he had grown into such a mine.

She jumped onto the top of a wave on her boogie board to avoid being knocked over by it. She let the board keep the top of her body afloat as her feet kicked the water behind her to reach the bigger and better waves.

In a matter of seconds, Spencer found a wave that would suffice as a perfect first wave. She paddled and kicked to meet the break of the wave, and saw Cody right behind her, trying to catch it, too.

And he was successful because they both rode the wave all the way in, Cody just beating her by half an inch.

"May the odds be ever in my favor," he laughed, quoting The Hunger Games.

"Uh-huh," Spencer teased. As Cody was still resting on his board, basking in the light of his accomplishment, she was already up and swimming out to catch the next big wave. "See you on the flip side," she imitated the surfers they would always see, extending her pinkie and thumb like a fake phone and shaking her hand back and forth.

"Hey!" Cody shouted, running to catch up. "That's not fair, you had a head start."

"Oh, stop complaining," she teased.

"There's one!" Cody yelled, pointing to a wave just beginning to form. That was going to be a major doozy to ride if they caught it.

Which, of course, they did.

After Spencer won that wave, going at least half a foot farther than he did, they won three more waves each.

"Ready for the tiebreaker?" Cody asked, sitting on his board.

"You bet," Spencer replied ready to go. Even though she was getting kind of tired from all of the boogie boarding that she hadn't done since she moved to New York, her adrenaline was pumping out of control, keeping her awake and raring to go.

Victory was within her grasp.

She needed to catch the best and most perfect wave to maintain her title as undisputed champion of the ocean.

After at least 5 minutes of waiting and ignoring jump waves, she spotted it out in the distance; a the most enormous wave she could ever hope to ride.

Immediately, her arms dug into the water with her legs kicking furiously, pushing herself forward at record speeds. She needed to catch this one.

It was the wave.

And she wanted it badly.

Just at the right moment, she spun herself around as the wave collapsed over her, propelling her forward. She didn't even notice Cody was there until he was waving at her when they broke the surface. She willed herself to keep just far enough ahead of him to win.

When they reached the shore, she realized it was a waste of time to think about. She was a good 4 feet in front of him.

"Well," Cody said, pulling himself off the ground. "I guess this means you are the reigning champion. It is an honor to be in your presence, Sensei Spencer," he mockingly bowed with a little wink that sent butterflies breeding in her stomach like crazy.

"Ha ha," she laughed with no emotion behind it. Then she teased, "You better be."

Helping her off the ground, she shook the sand off of her bikini. There was a tiny breeze picking up, and, still partially blinded by the salt water in her eyes, she grabbed her shirt to put it on.

When she slipped it on, she noticed it was very loose and hung off her body. That's when she finally realized it: it was Cody's shirt!

Blushing the deepest shade of red possible, she fumbled when she tried to remove it from her body, being unsuccessful in the process. All it did was make Cody laugh.

"Just keep it on," he permitted. "I'm not cold at all." When she asked if he was certain, he teasingly replied with, "Yes, or I would've taken it back myself."

She couldn't help but roll her eyes. That was the Cody she always knew and loved. She's so happy he didn't change much at all.

After gathering HER clothes and putting it in her beach bag, she swung it on her shoulder and started walking down the shoreline.

"Where are you going?" Cody asked, jogging to catch up with her then matching her pace.

"To take a walk," she replied a-matter-of-factly. "You're welcome to join me if you'd like."

"I thought that's what I was doing, but thank you, for your permission," he joked.

"I never go anywhere without it," she teased, flashing a quick grin at him to which her replied with one of his own. She could've sworn his perfectly straight and white teeth almost blinded her when he gave her his million dollar smile. It took everything in her not to whip out her cell phone and take a picture of it.
