Epilogue
Spencer's POV:
*Two Years Later*
Spencer was sitting on her couch with her feet tucked under a dark green, woolen blanket, waiting for Cody to come in with the hot chocolate he promised he'd make. The frigid winter air seeped through the small opening under her door, and she shivered as she wrapped the blanket tighter around her shoulders. Her gold wedding band brushed the skin of her neck, and the cold absorbed in it almost made her jump.
"I have returned triumphantly!" Cody announced dramatically, stepping into the living room with two steaming glasses of hot chocolate, and Spencer absolutely loved it; she was a kid at heart when it came to that specific drink. "Careful, it's hot."
"Thank you!" she practically yanked the mug out of Cody's hand and wrapped her fingers around the warmth of it graciously. "I hate winter," Spencer spat at Mother Nature.
"I like it," Cody declared, smiling. He took a seat next to Spencer, and after carefully placing his beverage down on the wooden coffee table, he placed his hands on Spencer's shoulders, rubbing her upper arms back and forth. She leaned into him and rested her head on his shoulder. He finished his earlier statement with, "Since it means I get to do this with you."
Spencer smiled and felt her cheeks heat up, so she buried her face in his chest. After all the years she's known him, she never could stop blushing whenever he said something like that to her. She could feel him vibrate in laughter.
"Life is so weird sometimes," she allowed her thoughts to fill the air.
"Oh yeah?" Cody questioned. "How so?"
"I can't really explain it," she began slowly. "It's like my brain is full of a jumbled mess of words to describe it, but I can't put them together into a coherent sentence."
"Makes sense," he nodded thoughtfully, taking hold of the ceramic mug full of the steaming hot, dark liquid. "It sure isn't normal."
"I don't think such a thing even exists," she muttered, staring off into middle space. "Anyways, what do you want to do today? We're stuck indoors because of the snow."
"Yeah..." he trailed off. "Well at least we still have-"
Cody was abruptly cut off by the flickering of the lights before they were consumed by total darkness.
"-electricity," he finished his earlier, and now false, statement. "Guess I spoke too soon."
"You jinxed it!" Spencer teased, laughing while playfully punching his shoulder. "Let's go find some candles. I think there are some upstairs in a cabinet."
"Alright," Cody got up before lending a helping hand to Spencer. "Lead the way."
Spencer took slow, cautious steps, stretching her hands out in front of her to avoid crashing into anything. On the way up, she opened some curtains to let some light filter in through the windows. There wasn't much, but she took what she could get.
When she reached the top of the stairs, she opened the door to her bedroom and stepped inside, opening the gap the door made wider for Cody to enter as well. They walked over to where the cabinets were and opened one of them, searching for an alternative source of light. When the first search was a botch, they looked in the next one. Spencer reached out one of her hands and lo and behold, there were two Yankee candles not yet opened; their wicks white and unused.
"Got two candles!" Spencer exclaimed excitedly.
"Great," Cody smiled in return. "Do you have a lighter?"
Spencer's mouth formed an "O" shape when she realized she didn't think that far ahead. "No, but I think there's one in the bedside table."
She walked over to the bed and sat down on the edge, opening the drawer to her table and rummaging through its contents before producing a small lighter.
"Got i-" Spencer began but abruptly stopped when she felt Cody's hands lightly grip her waist from behind. He began running his fingertips up and down the sides of her torso, making her shiver, and she set the lighter down on the table as she leaned her head back.
Cody took the opportunity to kiss her neck and give her butterfly kisses from her jawline to her collarbone and up again. She pulled away to spin around, wrap her arms around his neck, and bring his head closer to her to kiss him.
He gently pushed her down on the bed then crawled on top of her, propping himself up on his elbows and continuing to kiss her with more strength than before. She eagerly returned it with the same amount of passion he was giving. She moaned against his lips and he grinned, right before slipping his tongue into her mouth.
Before they knew it, all of their articles of clothing were on the floor, and as one thing led to another... let's just say that they didn't light the candles until a couple hours later.
When a couple hours did roll around, they were lying down together in bed, wrapped in each other's arms.
"I love you, Cody Henry," Spencer breathed out, connecting their lips once more.
"I love you, too, Spencer Henry," Cody grinned boyishly. "And I couldn't imagine spending the rest of my life with anyone else."
"I feel the same way," she added at the end.
"It was a long, hard journey, but I'm just glad that in the end, you became mine," Cody told her.
"I agree with most of that, but there's just one thing wrong: this is only just the end of the beginning for us," Spencer amended. "I mean from high school to college to the trip to North Carolina..." Spencer trailed off, giddily smiling to herself. "Just look at what we've become."
Spencer smiled up at her husband who was gazing into her eyes lovingly as he whispered, "Perfect."
