Before I could object, she tugs on the door handle. Of course its locked but she easily pulls up the lock on the car window seal and it makes a little 'click' sound.
Again, she pulls on the knob but this time the door of the moving vehicle swings open, revealing a fast-passing scene of all corn field and gravel road.
She turns to me. "I swear to God, Kade. You better follow me."
Then she was gone. Just like that, she throws herself out of the car with a thud. To be honest, I didn't think she was actually gonna do it.
Damn.
I follow, closing my eyes and preparing for impact, I jump out making sure I land in the field rather than the road. Wouldn't matter either way I guess.
Finishing my roll on my back, I lay there a moment in the cold dew that's still stuck to the grass. Suddenly, I feel extremely tired and my head starts to ache just a little.
I prop myself up with my elbows and the sun instantly beams over the tall crops behind me, hitting me in the eyes.
"Echo!" I yell, shielding my eyes from the harsh light.
It takes a moment but she answer. "Yeah, over here." I look over to my left. "How was your landing?" She jokes.
"Sucked."
I spot her gazing down the long road. "How far do you think she'll drive before she notices the back door's open?"
"Eh. I give it a mile." I bet.
"I give it two." She challenges.
I gain the strength to stand and make my way over to her and holding out my hand for her to take. She scrunches up her face in reaction to the sun in her eyes. Probably the cutest thing I'll ever see.
She takes my offer of help and I practically lift her to her feet then I take a real look around for the first time since I woke up. I see some odd, tall, brown animal standing on all fours, its head to the ground.
"Woah!" I exclaim, pointing in excitement. "What is that?"
I look to her. She looks across the road to the animal. She seems confused. Looking at me, she answers with, "Um...it's a deer. Duh."
I peer over at it again and it lifts its head and looks towards our direction.
"You've never seen one before?" She asks.
"Um..." I feel a bit embarrassed by the confusion in her voice. Was I supposed to know what it was? Apparently. "No."
She giggles.
"Can we go touch it?"
"That's not a good idea."
At that moment is when I realized, we have absolutely no idea where we are.
"Do you know how to get back?"
"How do you figure I would know? You're the one that lives around here."
I feel dumb for even asking but I wouldn't know my way back either. I haven't barely been out of my neighborhood, except for when I used to go to school but that's about it.
I feel her grab my hand and I'm taken aback. She starts pulling me along the side of the corn fields, the opposite direction for which the car had been headed.
"Where are we going?" I ask.
"Where do you think? Obviously we came from this way if we were going the other way."
"Right. I knew that. You're smart."
"No. You just talk with your mouth too much. Use your brain." She says.
I look over my shoulder down the dirt and rocky road, feeling a bit of discomfort. There's no sign of the vehicle that we had been in nor any other vehicle at that.
Man this sucks.
I feel my feet already getting sore underneath me and I can't help but sigh and think, why me?
